Obituary For Yim Ying Mah

Yim Ying Mah passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 98.

Yim Ying was born on August 30, 1928, in Toishan, Guangdong, China. There, she attended school and fell in love with her future husband, Hing Mah, in 1947. In 1950, Yim Ying moved to Canada to reunite with Hing in Edmonton, AB. That same year, they were married in Edmonton before moving to Windsor, ON.

After welcoming their first child, Emily, in 1951, Yim Ying and Hing moved back to Edmonton two years later. In 1954, they made Grande Prairie their home, where Hing opened Bamboo Gardens with his younger brother, Jerry. Yim Ying later welcomed their sons, William and Gordon.

Yim Ying enjoyed her years in Grande Prairie, spending time socializing with family and friends and playing games such as mahjong and cards. She loved to always cook for others.

A loving and compassionate woman, Yim Ying always put the needs of others before her own. A devout Christian, she was very involved with the Grande Prairie Chinese Christian Fellowship Church, where she confidently shared her faith with others.

Yim Ying will be lovingly remembered by her children, Emily (John) Smith, William (Jeneva) Mah, and Gordon Mah; brother Guy (Louisa) Lee; grandchildren Lindsay (Everett) Marshall, Keely Mah, Kayla Mah, Khloe Mah, and Jenna Mah; and great-grandchildren Amaya and Skyler Marshall.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hing Mah; grandson Preston Smith; sister Soon-Ying; and parents Hochee Leong and Sheong Tak.

A service will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 11:00 am at McLaurin Baptist Church (10913 107 Ave, Grande Prairie, AB), followed by interment at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Ave and 112 St). Afterward, friends are invited to join the family back at the church for a luncheon.
