Obituary For William "Bill" Russell Hrushka
William “Bill” Hrushka left us on December 6, 2025, at the age of 86.
Bill was born on May 7, 1939, to Nickolas and Mary (Senuik) Hrushka at their homestead in Lubeck District, west of Hines Creek, AB. He was raised on the family farm alongside his sister, Nagia (Kitzmann), and brothers Michael, Maurice, John, and Sylvester (Syl).
Bill attended Royce School as a child, where he developed a love for music, often playing guitar and singing. This passion for music stayed with him throughout his life, even as he embarked on a career full of hard work and dedication.
Bill’s career was as varied as it was impressive. He started out in road construction in the Peace Country, working as a Cat and grader operator, as well as a truck driver. He eventually became a bus driver for Canadian Coachways and Greyhound, serving communities in Peace River and Edmonton. After his bus driving career, Bill moved back to Hines Creek with his wife, Irene (Zavisha), Parker, Darren, and Goldie. He then began working as a foreman for Alberta Transportation, managing road building and maintenance projects.
In 1974, Bill founded Hrushka Consulting, leveraging his extensive experience in road construction and dirt moving. His business grew steadily, and he later expanded to Done-Rite Disposals. At one point, his businesses employed over 20 full-time staff, and his company’s work left a lasting impact on the region. Bill eventually settled in Grande Prairie, where he established permanent operations, continuing to work and contribute to the community he loved. Bill was a long-time member of ACT/UCT for 40+ years, as well as a tenured member of the local Ukrainian church community.
In his later years, Bill was remarried to Pat (Morgan/Swaboda) in 1988, and together they shared a life filled with love, adventure, and countless memories. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Patricia; sister Nagia Kitzmann; brothers John, Maurice, and Michael; and his parents, Nickolas and Mary Hrushka.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Bill is survived by his brother, Sylvester (Mitz) Hrushka; children Parker (Trudy) Hrushka, Darren (Gail) Hrushka, and Goldie (Warren) Ross; grandchildren Brodi (Leanne) Hrushka, Josh Hrushka, Mandy Hrushka, Bailey Ross, Taitt Ross, Dayle Ross, Megan Hrushka, and Oaklan Hrushka; great-granddaughters Danica and Dawsyn; as well as numerous extended family members, all of whom will cherish his memory.
A gathering for family and friends will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave). The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary - Roman Catholic Church (927-4 Ave, Hines Creek, AB, T0H 2A0). Interment to follow at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Cemetery in Royce, AB. Following the interment, there will be a fellowship lunch at the Dunvegan Motor Inn in Fairview, AB.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to any local food bank, as it is a difficult time of year for some, and Bill always liked to help others.

Our condolences to Goldie, Darren and Parker and your families on Bill's passing. I first met Bill in the late 70's. Since that time we worked together, played together and just generally stayed in touch over the years. There are stories that could be told but are better untold. We'll miss you Bill. Richard or Carol Horner
Carol and I are saddened by the news of Bill's passing. For 14 years we were his and Pat's neighbors and we shared many times together. Carol even worked for Bill on an ad hoc basis. He was a very caring and generous person. Many a mornings silence was broken by Bill going up and down his lawn on his prized John Deer tractor, he just needed to be busy. While we are saddened by his passing we are gladdened in the knowledge that his was a life well lived and we are very thankful that he crossed our path. Our sincere condolences go out to Parker, Darren, Goldie and their families, Bill will be missed and often thought of. Rick and Carol Horner
