We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For William (Bill) L. Slack
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of William (Bill) Slack, of Grande Prairie, Alberta, on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 73 years. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Born on January 18, 1953, and raised in Smiths Falls, Ontario, Bill earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph and Master of Science (Animal Science) from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He dedicated his career to animal science, specifically in the dairy field. Bill worked with the University of British Columbia, Alberta Agriculture, and the Canadian International Development Agency. For over 25 years, he contributed immensely to the development of China’s fast-growing dairy industry, where he will be greatly missed by so many close friends.
Bill found joy in the simple things. He enjoyed travelling throughout China and discovering local delicacies. Many trout were caught while fly fishing from his canoe, and he loved tying flies. Bill had a knack for growing flowers, including violets and orchids, and took great care of his backyard garden. He was also partial to woodworking, cross-country skiing, and mountain bike riding. But above all, he cherished spending time with his four grandchildren. He had a strong love for family and always made every effort to see his sisters, brother, nieces, and nephews whenever he had the chance.
Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Rong Li (Rebecca); daughter Shannon Armstrong (née Slack) and son-in-law Neil Armstrong; grandchildren Aiden Armstrong, William Armstrong, Lilly Slack, and Owen Slack; brother James (Jamie) and sister-in-law Ginny Slack; brother-in-law Doug Rumsey; sister-in-law Juan Li and brother-in-law Peng Zhang, brother-in-law Kai Li and sister-in-law Huiqi Meng; along with many nieces and nephews and many other family members both in Canada and in China.
He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Slack; sisters Sarah Margaret Rumsey (née Slack) and Barbara McNeely (née Slack); and his parents, James Walton Slack and Flora Emma Slack (née Plato).
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Bill, you will be forever remembered and always loved.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made toward benches to be placed at some of his favourite locations, creating a lasting tribute in the places he enjoyed most. Those wishing to make a memorial donation may do so by e-transfer to slackw@hotmail.com or by reaching out to a member of the Slack Family.
