Obituary For Vern Frederick Pillsworth
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Vern Pillsworth, who left us peacefully on Thursday June 12, 2025, at the age of 86. He was surrounded by the love of his family in his final moments.
Born in Dawson Creek on July 14, 1938, to Fred and Irene Pillsworth; the second of seven children. Vern lived a life marked by compassion, generosity, and quiet strength. He devoted himself to his family and worked tirelessly to ensure they always had a place to call home. Vern consistently put others before himself, a testament to his deeply selfless nature.
At just 17, Vern began a long and rewarding career in the oil patch, which took him across British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan before eventually settling back in Alberta. In addition to his dedication to the oilfield, Vern embraced life as a farmer and cattle rancher. He took pride in caring for the land. He passed down his knowledge and values to his children and grandchildren.
More than a hard worker, Vern was the heart of his family and a pillar of his community. Known for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, and unwavering kindness, he was always ready with a helping hand or a warm smile.
Vern is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Shona (Bryce) and Rhonda; his sons, Murray (Leanna) and Ashley (Kimberley); 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren—with one more soon to arrive. He will also be fondly remembered by his siblings, Edna, Pearl (Thor), and Joe (Pat), sister-in-law Joyce Pillsworth, and brother-in-law Ray Vandemark. Vern will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Mackenzie Place for their excellent care over the past year, the nurses on Unit 23 at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital for their compassion during Vern’s final week, and especially the team at Grande Prairie Hospice for the incredible kindness shown to Vern and his family in his final hours.
As per Vern’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. A private family interment will take place at Gordondale Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest beside his wife Hazel.
In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made in Vern’s memory to the Grande Prairie Prairie Lake Hospice - prairielake.hospicemanager@ppsl.com
or The Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, in honor of his legacy of love and care. https://alzheimer.ca
