Obituary For Sylvia Olga Fraser

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia Olga Fraser. Sylvia passed away on December 9, 2025, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital at the age of 81 years.

She was born in Sexsmith, AB, on January 14, 1944, the second child of Jim and Alice Grassick and sister to Donald, Jeannie, and Allison. Sylvia was raised on their farm six miles east of Sexsmith. She attended Mount Star School and Sexsmith Public High School.

In 1961, Sylvia and Reid Maxwell were married and made their first home in Fort St. John, BC, with their daughter, Laurie. Their second daughter, Sherri, was born three years later and completed their little family.

Sylvia’s career started at the North Peace Savings and Credit Union, where she worked her way to a supervisor position. She changed her career path, becoming the office manager for Flint Engineering and Construction until deciding to return home. In 1975, the family moved to Sexsmith, where she worked for Coneco Equipment and then went on to sell life insurance for Taisco Agencies Ltd. Sylvia eventually moved to Edmonton, AB, and married Keith Fraser in 1983. They travelled extensively throughout the western provinces, selling for various golf equipment manufacturers. In 2000, they moved back to Grande Prairie to retire.

Sylvia was an enthusiastic, outgoing, intelligent, meticulous, and competitive lady. She was a very talented seamstress who taught sewing to the 4-H clubs. She was known for designing and sewing both her wardrobe and her children’s. Sylvia loved painting and reading. Her plants and flowers thrived like no others. She excelled at all sports and was one of the top fastball pitchers in the Peace River area, along with being a competitive golfer and bowler. She enjoyed skiing, hunting, camping, and quadding. Sylvia and Keith travelled throughout BC, AB, California, Florida, Arizona, Mexico, Europe, and Hawaii, with skis or golf clubs, and sometimes both. She enjoyed dancing and music immensely, and later in life, she loved dancing at Prairie Lakes.

Sylvia leaves behind her daughter, Laurie (David) Sandboe and their children, Erin (Kelsey) Hoffos, Malin (Erin) Sandboe, and Heidi (Nic) Hargreaves; daughter Sherri (Alan) Wenzel and their children, Shae (Tyrell Hoffos) Wallan, Aimee (Kody) Deley, Reid Wallan, and Kaylene Starko; sister Allison (Tom) Dechaine and their daughter, Melissa Dechaine; step-daughter Marla Fraser (Cam Macmillan) and their children, Sean (Jess Belyk) Macmillan, Joel (Amanda Warren) Macmillan, and Kim (Lee) Horton, step-daughter Shanna (Glen) Wright and their children, Chance (Samantha Mcgillivray) Wright, and Cassidy (Corbin) Kalke; great-grandchildren Kash, Olive, and Saige Hoffos, Laine Noskiye, Ophelia, Haakon, and Henrik Sandboe, Thorton and Indie Hargreaves, Brynn and Breah Wallan, Levi, Jace, and Kenzie Hoffos, Asher, Harlowe, Romee, and Chey Deley, Ayden, Avery and Annika Starko, Skye and Isla Macmillan, and Jeremy Horton. Special friend, Del Halterman, her caring and supportive companion for the last few years.

Sylvia was predeceased by her husband, Keith Fraser; parents James and Alice Grassick; sister Jeannie Murray; brother Donald Grassick; and nephew Troy Bakke.

Sylvia was a very dedicated and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be remembered and missed by many family and friends.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave). Following the service, friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon in Oliver’s Tea Room. Following the luncheon, interment will be held at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Ave and 112 St).

Although I have never met Sylvia I feel a close connection with her thanks to my brother Del Halterman. They brought happiness to each other these past several years and for that I'm very grateful! December 15-2025
