Obituary For Shirley Marlene Hutt (nee Letcher)

On Saturday, July 30, 2022, our dear mother, Shirley Marlene Hutt passed away peacefully in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 86 years.

Shirley Letcher was born in Edmonton, AB, on August 2, 1935. Shirley spent her childhood growing up in the neighbourhood of Bonnie Doon. She had many fond memories of playing in the Mill Creek ravine and family picnics at Elk Island Park.

She graduated from the Royal Alexandra Hospital Nursing program in 1957. Her classmates became lifelong friends that she always cherished and was able to stay in close contact with for 65 years. While nursing in Lloydminster, AB, Shirley met her husband, Lloyd Hutt of Grande Prairie. After marrying, the two moved to Dawson Creek, BC, to set up a successful business and raise a family. Shirley enjoyed living in Dawson Creek for 30 years and was very involved in the community. Shirley was a pathfinder, dedicating many years raising educational awareness and support for children with cognitive disabilities.

In her retirement years, Shirley and Lloyd spent many winters as snowbirds, travelling to their favorite destination, El-Centro, CA. Although Lloyd was the gifted golfer, Shirley could always boast she had the hole in one! They moved to Grande Prairie in 1995, bringing them closer to grandchildren and family. Shirley joined the Forbes Presbyterian church and enjoyed being an active member. She became well known for her incredibly delicious pies and creative flower arrangements. Shirley was also known for her love of painting and creative photo editing. She put together picture albums which captured a lifetime of wonderful memories to pass on to her children and grandchildren.

She will be lovingly missed by her children: Marilyn Cramer, Douglas (Jackie) Hutt, and Sandra (Dale) Pollard; as well as fondly remembered by her five grandchildren: Kaylee, Tricia, Tiffany, Hayden, and Christopher (Madison).

Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Lloyd Hutt; son-in-law Charlie Cramer; as well as her sister Betty Mitchell.

A private Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at the Grande Prairie Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life tea to follow at 2:00pm, at Forbes Presbyterian Church (9635 76 Ave.).

In lieu of flowers and memorial donations, open a picture album and share a memory with a loved one, as she so loved to do.

We grew up together, in Bonnie Doon as next door neighbours and shared those wonderful years of early Edmonton—the magic of Mill Creek and the pathways to the bright lights of White Ave. Your friend, Bud Sollitt

I had the pleasure of getting to know Shirley through music. She came to me for piano lessons. She was always so cheerful and kind. My heart felt condolences to the family.
