Shirley Joan Mitchell passed away at 9am on Monday, February 26, 2024 at Mackenzie Place in Grande Prairie, AB at the age of 92 years.

Shirley was born November 11, 1931, to Roy and Olive Parker Riddell on their farm near Pefferlaw, ON. She spoke of happy memories growing up on the farm with her three brothers and one sister.

Shirley met William Mitchell through a farm newspaper advertisement and she came to Alberta on the train. They were married on June 23, 1973 in Wanham, AB. Bill and Shirley made their living farming in Heart Valley, AB. They shared their love with several foster children, especially with daughter Velma and granddaughter Cassandra. The farm was regretfully sold in 1983 because of Bill's health and the family moved to Bezanson, AB.

In 1991, Shirley and Bill relocated to Creston, BC, and in 2002 to Hythe, AB. In 2013 Bill's health was poor again so a move was made to Amisk Court in Beaverlodge, AB. Shortly after that Bill passed away, leaving Shirley very lonely.

Shirley had a simple trusting faith in Jesus and faithfully attended church as long as she was able. She made many friends wherever she lived. Her affectionate nature and smiles brightened many a caregiver's day. She knitted countless pairs of socks, scarves, doll dresses and blankets which, she loved giving away, especially to children. She was always delighted to have children come to visit. We all loved her sense of humour and her enthusiasm for life. She was the last remaining member of Bill and her immediate family.

Shirley will be sadly missed by her daughter Velma; granddaughter Cassandra, grandson Jared Worden, two great-granddaughters, special friends Nora and Carl Loetkeman; as well as a host of friends.

We extend a special thank you to her many caregivers during the last several years at Amisk Court, Hythe Pioneer Homes, Beaverlodge Hospital, and Mackenzie Place.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 at 11am at Living Springs Mennonite Church in Hythe, AB (530 AB-672), with Interment to follow at Heart Valley Cemetery in Wanham, AB (RR 1).
