Obituary For Samuel (Sam) John Stromberg Lowe

Sam Lowe, longtime resident of Grande Prairie, passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at the Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie, at the age of 87 years.

Sam will be sadly missed by his children: Dianne Lowe, Kate (Darrell) Blimke, and Sam (Diane) Lowe of Grande Prairie; grandchildren: Shawne (Trisha Strong) Lowe and Ian (Roula) Lowe both of Ontario, Jenna Blimke of Grande Prairie, Sammy Lowe of Camrose, and William Blimke of Edmonton; great-grandchildren: Colton and Tanner Strong, Alex and Rebecca Sourzis, and Karen and Evelyn Lowe, all of Ontario; sister Marion Knoll of Victoria; sisters in-law: Margaret Lowe of Grande Prairie and Lorraine Lowe of Edmonton; brothers in-law: Jack Lobb, Brian (Teresa) Hanson and Darryl (Lynn Preston) Hanson of Grande Prairie. Sam also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and longtime friends.

He was predeceased by his wife Jean, son Leonard Lowe, daughter in-law Karen Howard, brothers Bill and Jim Lowe, and sister Penny Powell.

Sam was born to Sam and Kate Lowe on April 9, 1929 on the family farm at Lake Saskatoon, AB and moved to Grande Prairie as a young boy where he spent most of his life. Sam quit school the day he turned 18 to start work fulltime at Frontier Lumber to help support his family. He continued working in the building supply business in Grande Prairie and Peace River for most of his working life.

Sam met Jean Lobb and her two small children in 1956 and Jean and Sam were married in June of 1958. Sam and Jean raised their family in Grande Prairie. Sam was particularly interested in his children’s musical endeavors, joining the MAPA band to learn to play trombone and joining the Grande Prairie Marching Band with Kate, Sam E., and Jean.

Sam was an active member of the Kinsmen, and then K-40s, the Lake Saskatoon Masonic Lodge, and was active on the board of the Grande Prairie Museum.

A special thank you to the Staff at Emerald Gardens and Points West Hospice for all the care and compassion shown to Sam.

Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 12:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.) with interment to follow at Grande Prairie Cemetery (84th Ave, and 112th St.). A Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at 11:00am at Oliver’s Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Grande Prairie Hospice Palliative Care Society (Box 21215, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 6W7), or to a charity of your choice.

    So sorry to hear about Sam passing. I always had fun working with him at the museum especially the pioneer experience program. Sam would come in at a moments notice if I needed someone to help with the program. I learned a lot from him and shared many a laugh with him. Rest well Sam.
