Sabina Melnyk (Galecki) passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025. She is now joyfully resting in the arms of Jesus and will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

Sabina grew up on the family farm in Weasel Creek, AB. She never shied away from the hard work that came with homesteading life, helping her parents and younger brothers, Leon and Alex, with daily chores. She had a special love for animals, riding horses, and was known to sneak a barn cat or two into the house when she could.

After graduating from Shakespeare School in the County of Thorhild, Sabina began working in Radway, where she met and married Mike Melnyk. Together they raised their family there until Sabina later moved to Edmonton, where she enjoyed her retirement. Eventually, she made her home in Grande Prairie to be closer to Brenda and her family. She treasured every moment of becoming a great-grandmother.

Sabina was always ready with a cup of coffee when you stopped by and loved a good game of cards or bingo. She was known for her quick wit, sharp sense of humour, and feisty spirit that could brighten anyone’s day.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children Dwayne (Sandra) Melnyk, Brenda (Rick) Zimmerman, and Robert (Lorna) Melnyk; her grandchildren Adam (Alex) Melnyk, Haley Melnyk, Eric Melnyk, Joshua (Courtney) Zimmerman, Jarrett Zimmerman, Joel (Monika) Zimmerman, Jessica (Austin) Melnyk, and Logan (Isha) Melnyk; and her great-grandchildren Blake, Ellis, and Luke.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Prairie Lakes Seniors Community and the doctors at Family Medicine for their kind and compassionate care. Sabina was fondly known as “Baba” or “Mama” by many. Special thanks to Shalene, who always brought out her smile (and her cheeky side) and helped us through our final days together.

Sabina will be laid to rest with her parents, Mary and Wojciech Galecki, at St. Anne’s Catholic Cemetery in Thorhild, AB, in the spring.
