Rodney "Rod" Gibson

January 22, 1949 - September 18, 2022

Obituary For Rodney "Rod" Gibson

Rod Gibson, resident of Rycroft, AB, formerly of Sherwood Park, AB, and Fairview, AB, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2022, in Edmonton, AB, at the age of 73 years.

Rod was born on January 22, 1949, in Fairview to Joe and Hilda Gibson. He had an older sister Jo-Anne (Wedman) and a younger brother Larry. Rod spent most of his youth on a farm at the top of the hill on the north side of Dunvegan Valley. He graduated from Grade 12 in Fairview. He was president of the Student Union. While he was MC’ing the Graduation Ceremony, he first spotted Bev, his future bride in the crowd. They dated for a year and were married on June 24, 1967.

Rod and Bev moved to Edmonton so that he could pursue his apprenticeship training as a Steamfitter, Gasfitter, and a Plumber. Rod worked mainly as a plumber for about 45 years.

Rod loved to joke and tease! Those who knew Rod, will each have their own personal stories about their time with him. Even when discussing what type of funeral he might like, his humour clearly showed through. He said he did not want a funeral because he did not want to subject people to egg salad sandwiches (he detested mayo and onions!).

In past years, Rob loved fishing with his sons: Patrick, Wayne, Shane, and Reed. In later years, he and Bev travelled extensively to Europe, the South Pacific, Mexico, Hawaii, the US, and China. They took approximately twenty cruises, the longest being a one-month cruise to Tahiti and Bora Bora. Rod and Bev entertained friends and enjoyed playing cards, particularly Canasta.

Rod will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Bev (nee Bzowy); sons: Patrick, Wayne, Shane (Dani), and Reed; grandchildren: Jesse Formella, Ash Gibson-Brown, and Sarek Nenn. Rod will also be missed by his sister Jo-Anne (Otto); sisters in-law Rita Helmig and Debbie Bzowy; brothers in-law: Andy (Marilyn) Bzowy and Doug Bzowy; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

Rod was predeceased by is father Joe Gibson in 2007; mother Hilda Gibson in 2008; mother in-law Doris Bzowy in 1992; father in-law Ivan Bzowy in 2002; infant daughter Laura in 1973; as well as brother Larry Gibson in 2017.

As per Rod’s wishes, there will be no Funeral Service.

My most sincere condolences to you Bev and your family. I met you both when you were just 18 and newly married living in Edmonton and expecting Patrick. Rod was such a good man with a great sense of humour and you were such a great couple facing the future together. As I moved about in Canada over the years we connected again a few times and then lost touch for a number of years. But it was you Bev who found me again through my daughters facebook. I was so grateful to find you both again and to see you again in the last few years. Rod was the best the very best and I am so sorry that he is gone from you. My most loving thoughts are with you all. Doreen Saunders here in Mitchell Ontario

Bev & family- How many wonderful memories we shared although it was years ago when we last saw you both. Friendship has no time limit. Rod apprenticed Rus and was a mentor to him always as Rus had so much respect for him. Rest in peace Rod you were one hell of a great guy. We shared many laughs while we raised our families. Deepest sympathies to you Bev and your family during this difficult time.

I never met any of his immediate family, but family is still family. Sympathy to all. Your loss is forever but so are your memories. I knew his parents and it is no surprise that he was a great guy and loved a joke. Regards from Fallbrook, Terry Gibson.

What can I say. Rod was such a tease and I have fond memories of an abundance of laughter when we got together. Somehow he convinced me to help paint the small house in France and to get the baguettes early in the morning. Rest in peace my friend, you brought light to so many of us.

We only knew him for a short while. As of late he would walk the block and visit me at his first rest spot, the head of my driveway. Funny man, he'll be missed. Lucy and Vaughan
