Obituary For Rodger Kenneth Black

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Rodger Black, of Grande Prairie, AB, on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the age of 91 years, surrounded by his family.

Rodger was born on January 17, 1934, near Bronte, ON, to parents Anne and Allan Black.

Rodger moved out West at the age of 15 and to Grande Prairie in 1951, where he found the love of his life and married Ruth Robideau in 1952. Together, they raised four boys and two girls.

Rodger had a successful career of 35 years with the Alberta Transportation Department of Highways. He truly loved his work. He had a remarkable memory for dates and places. All through his life, he enjoyed family, camping, fishing, golfing, reading, and daily journaling.

In retirement, Rodger enjoyed morning coffee with friends and past co-workers. Ruth and Rodger enjoyed many years of traveling with family and friends.

Rodger will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ruth of 72 years; his children Keith (Val) Black, Ken (Virginia) Black, Wayne (Darlene) Black, Lillian Palmer, and Ruthie (Sean) Frey; his grandchildren Jessica (Blair) Fisher, Carla (Blair) Reany, Jodie (Mark) Grinder, Kristina (Riley) DeMetz, Kim (Dan) Toonders, Tad Black, and Aiden Frey; great-grandchildren Aurora and Nevara Fisher, Dayne and Connor Oe, Iradessa Grinder, Caleb and Nolan Toonders, Jesse Guay-Black, and Tyson Black; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Rodger was predeceased by his son Allan Black, granddaughter Kristie Black, son-in-law Mike Palmer, as well as several additional family members.

A memorial service for Rodger will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 1:00 pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Ave), Grande Prairie, with a luncheon to follow. Interment will follow the luncheon at the Grande Prairie Cemetery.
