Obituary For Robert "Doug" Douglas Menzies

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Doug Menzies on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at the age of 84 years. Doug passed away peacefully at Spirit River Hospital surrounded by his family.

Doug leaves behind his devoted wife Theresa, whom he shared 58 years of cherished marriage; loving children Jim (Wendy) and Brenda; as well as adored granddaughters Kassandra (Kirk) and Kennedy (Dennis).

Doug was born in Spirit River, AB on September 18, 1939 to Thema (Keyser) and Bob Menzies. He spent his childhood on the family farm in Gordondale alongside his surviving siblings: Larry, Linda, and Beryl (Harvey). Doug attended elementary school in Gordondale before completing his schooling in Spirit River where he stayed in the dorm.

On October 23, 1965, Doug married the love of his life, Theresa. Together they built a home in Spirit River and raised their children. Doug loved the farm life and continued the family tradition working alongside his brother Larry until their sale in April 2004. In addition to farming Doug worked on rigs during the winter months. He was also an active member of the Spirit River Fire Department and served as the goal judge for the Ranger’s Hockey team for numerous years.

Known for his warm-hearted nature and infectious sense of humour, Doug brought joy to all who knew him. He had a knack for teasing those around him and took great pleasure in spending time with family and friends.

An avid outdoorsman, Doug had a passion for hunting, fishing, and his trap line. He enjoyed regular trips to check traps with his son Jim, even in his final months. Doug was also involved in sports throughout his life, excelling as a pitcher on a local hardball team. He enjoyed curling and golfing, and later took up volleyball and both cross-country and downhill skiing.

Doug will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A Celebration of his Life will be held later this Summer or Fall, with details to be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
