We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For Robert “Bob” Arthur Moen
Robert Arthur Moen, long-time resident of Spirit River, AB, and formerly of Bad Heart, AB, passed away peacefully at the Spirit River Hospital on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21, 2026, at the age of 85 years.
Bob was born in Sexsmith, AB, on September 19, 1940, to Ola and Helen Moen. He grew up on his father's homestead along the banks of the Bad Heart River with his younger siblings, Patricia and Arne.
A keen and bright student, Bob won a national essay contest celebrating the virtues of Canada in Grade 8. That same year, he proved his natural aptitude for agriculture by placing near the top of a national competition at the Toronto Fair for wheat he grew on a three-acre plot on the family farm.
Bob went on to earn a two-year agricultural diploma from Fairview College. In his younger years, he worked as a “cat skinner,” operating bulldozers for survey crews across northern Alberta and British Columbia. Eventually, his roots called him home. He took over the family homestead, where he farmed for many years alongside his wife, Irma, and their sons, Tim and Ryan. In 1998, Bob retired from a lifetime of dedication to the land when they sold the farm.
Retirement didn’t slow Bob down. He kept himself busy helping friends with their own farm work and taking on various odd jobs, including maintenance at the local golf course.
Bob was known for his sharp wit and effortless charm, always finding a way to make those around him smile and laugh. He was a highly competitive card player who truly ruled the cribbage board. He was also famously conscientious about the smaller details of life, particularly fire safety and electricity. Bob never met a candle he didn’t want to snuff out, or a light switch he didn’t want to turn off. Above all, his heart belonged to his family. He loved hitting baseballs for his boys and their friends, and nothing brought him more joy than getting down on the floor to play with his grandchildren.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irma, in 2017. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his sons, Ryan and Tim; his cherished grandchildren, Hayden, Calla, Joshua, Sara, Noah, Summer, Derika, and Dominic; his sister, Patricia; and a community of extended family and close friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the COCO Hall in Wanham, Alberta. A light luncheon will be served immediately following the service. After the luncheon, a brief graveside service will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the Spirit River Cemetery.
