Obituary For Richard Lyle Goodswimmer
We are saddened to announce that Richard Lyle Goodswimmer, resident of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation at the age of 46 years.
Richard was born on September 4, 1979, at the Valleyview Hospital and raised on the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. He attended Sturgeon Lake School starting from kindergarten and graduated with his grade 12 diploma. He furthered his education, enrolling in Camosun College in Victoria, B.C. Richard was employed with the Western Cree Tribe Council and the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta.
One of Richard’s greatest passions was music. He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing karaoke with his family and friends, and dancing. He loved listening to artists like The Trews, The Tragically Hip, and George Strait, just to name a few. In his spare time, Richard also found great joy in sports—hockey, football, baseball, and golf. His favourite hockey team was the Edmonton Oilers, and his most preferred player was #29, Leon Draisaitl.
Richard will be forever missed by his mother, Barbara Manchoos; his father, Floyd Goodswimmer (wife Amber); his godchildren, Tydon Goodswimmer and Tiara Goodswimmer; and his siblings, Brett Horseman, Lyanna Goodswimmer, Floyd Goodswimmer Jr., Jade Auger, Tyler Manchoos, Natasha Hamelin, Jeremy Goodswimmer, and Marcus Goodswimmer.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Louis and Rachel Manchoos, and Violet and Edward Goodswimmer; and his sisters, Tara Manchoos and Rachel Manchoos.
The viewing will take place on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie, Alberta (10005 107 Ave).
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Community Hall (Sturgeon Lake 154, AB, T0H 3N0).
