Obituary For Phyllis Evelyn Mattoon Stewart

Phyllis Evelyn Stewart, resident of Clairmont, AB, formerly of Bezanson, AB, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at the QEII Hospital, at the age of 91 years.

Phyllis was born September 6, 1927 in Consort, AB. She grew up in Consort and Ferintosh, and graduated from high school in New Norway, AB. At 19 years of age, she began her 30-year teaching career in a small, one-room school in Bezanson, the first of eleven schools she taught at, from High Prairie to Grandview Colony. After retiring, she served 9 years as a County Councilor, while also being involved in her farm at Bezanson, choir singing with the Sweet Adeline’s, and helping raise grandchildren.

Phyllis could sometimes be prickly, opinionated, and seemingly set in her ways. When she took on a task, she could be like a dog with a bone. It was just her nature. She liked to help with farming, gardening, and volunteered at the South Peace Archives to help preserve the history of the Grande Prairie area.

She will be sadly missed by her sister Freda Tarrant; daughter Cherry (Phil) Dionne; sons: Marvin (Jean) Stewart, Shannon (Cathy) Stewart, and Creston (Connie) Stewart; grandchildren: Bobbi Jo Dionne, Darcy Stewart, David (Sarah) Stewart, Ian (Jessica) Stewart, Heather (Jesse) Stewart, Calvin (Kelsey) Stewart, Carl (Bobbi) Stewart, and Curtis Stewart; great-grandchildren: Cheyanne Loos, Zoey, Max, and Emerson Stewart.

She was predeceased by her parents Mabel and Fred Mattoon; husband Charles Bevan Stewart, sister Patsy Campbell, brother Donald Mattoon, and nephew Colin Campbell.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 2:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Interment will be held at Glen Leslie Cemetery at a later date.

The family wishes to express their appreciation of the staff and management of the Grande Spirit Lakeview Seniors Facility with special thanks to the Home Care staff for helping Phyllis live as independently as she could and with dignity in her last years.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Condolences

  • June 24, 2021

Our condolences to my cousins, Cherry, Marvin, Shannon and Creston. Aunt Phyllis was a force to be reckoned with in her attempts to bring up a family of four under tough conditions on the farm and to get a teaching degree through long distance courses. She was of a generation that lived through the Depression and knew nothing but hard work. My dad, at age 100, sends his condolences as well.
