Obituary For Noreen Coogan Bickell

It is with great sadness that the family of Noreen Katherine Bickell announce her passing on Tuesday, August 25, 2015.

Noreen was born April 4, 1933 in Northmark, AB. She was soon joined by brothers Jack and Gerry and began her schooling at the Westmark School near Woking, AB. In 1942, the Coogan family purchased a farm west of DeBolt. It was here that youngest brothers, David and Brian, were born. Noreen attended the Darwin school near their farm, where her mother also taught. Noreen later attended the Grande Prairie High School, living away from home at the dorm. In August 1951, Noreen married Roy Allen Bickell. They established a home and farmed on Roy’s Grandfather’s original homestead north of DeBolt. During their time in DeBolt, their family grew to include daughters Judy (1952), Debra (1954) and son Richard (1957). In 1968, the family moved to Grande Prairie. Roy’s work with Canfor led to a move to Vancouver in 1984, where Noreen hosted visiting friends and family. Over the next several years, Noreen enjoyed travelling with Roy across the world, highlights being their trips to Soviet Union, Peru, China, Australia and New Zealand. Following Roy’s retirement, they returned to Grande Prairie in 1991.

Noreen loved to keep busy, enjoying travel, curling, golf, gardening and visiting her friends and family, cherishing time spent with her 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Roy and Noreen joyously celebrated a special milestone in August 2011, their 60th wedding anniversary.

Noreen was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years Roy Allen Bickell, her daughter Debra Elaine Ditch (Bickell), her father Leo Edward Coogan, her mother Hazel Eva Coogan (Gerry), brothers Jack Coogan and Gerry Coogan, brother in-law Richard George Bickell, sisters in-law Charlotte Bickell (Anderson) and Gaylia Bickell (Wetter).

Noreen will be sadly missed by her daughter Judy Brewster (Aubrey), son Richard Allen Bickell and son in-law Rod Ditch; grandchildren: Jeff Brewster (Tanya), Kirby Aldred (Todd), Hayley Ditch (Cody Woolsey) and Marina Bochsler (Robert); great-grandchildren: Brianna, Katelyn, Andrea, Makenna and Tia Brewster and Mick, Leo and Oaklynn Aldred; brothers David Coogan (Nina), Brian Coogan (Karen); sisters in-law Sheila Coogan and Marjorie (Curly) Coogan; brothers in-law: William “Bill” Bickell (Dona Jean), Robert “Bob” Bickell (Jeannette) and Harvey Bickell (Carol); as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Celebration of Noreen’s Life will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 2:00pm at St. Paul’s United Church in Grande Prairie (10206 100 Ave.), followed by a luncheon at the Golden Age Centre.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the QEII Hospital Foundation (10409 98 St Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 2E8) or to a charity of one’s choice.

Our condolences to the family of Noreen Bickell. Your mother, grandmother, and great grandmother was such a joy to visit with. Many years ago I remember her curling in the afternoon league with my Mom. Later in life, living close to Rod and Deb, and seeing her assisting over the years with the girls after Deb passed away. Noreen always was such a kind an thoughtful person. I always enjoyed the pictures that she shared of her grand kids and great grand kids, She was so proud of all of you. We always were so thrilled to visit with them, and often many family members out for Sunday brunch. Warm thoughts to all of you in the loss of this very special woman. Gail Haakstad
