Obituary For Nancy Elizabeth McDonald

On Sunday, August 28, 2022, our dear mother Nancy Elizabeth McDonald, passed away peacefully at the Prairie Lakes Seniors Community in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 87 years.

Nancy Hutt was born in Grande Prairie on October 3, 1934, to Leonard and Ellen May (Broadbridge) Hutt. Nancy and her siblings were raised on a farm in the Five Mile District. After losing her mother at the young age of 6, Nancy turned to doing the chores outside, driving the horses, and anything that kept her in nature. She was very involved in community sports teams and was the pitcher for the 1949 Five Mile Creek baseball team. Nancy took pride in education, travelling into town to attend high school at the Wapiti Lodge Dormitory.

Nancy met her partner in life, Donald McDonald, at Pellerin’s Ice Cream Social and they were married on June 18, 1954. Don and Nancy lived on the family farm until December 2015 when they moved into Grande Prairie. They had a summer home at Sturgeon Lake which they greatly enjoyed with family and friends, as well as a winter home in Yuma, AZ.

Nancy loved to garden, knitting mitts and socks, sewing clothes which turned into many hours of quilting and hand quilting…distributing her warmth of cuddle quilts throughout her family, and of course amazing baking. The cookie jars were never empty, there was always a Velveeta box full of cookies to be found in any farm vehicle. Picking berries, gathering eggs, making butter from fresh cream, canning fruits and vegetables and fresh jelly and jams…truly a farmers’ best catch!

Nancy strongly supported her community of Crystal Creek, was always up for a game of crib, and would have a care package ready for you if you stopped by the farm.

Nancy is survived by her children: Alex (Shelley), Brenda (Lionel Thomson), Barbara (Jim Fitzpatrick), and Everett (Tina); 13 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren; sister Joyce Kimpe; sister-in-law Lillian Hutt; and special family Don and Cherrill Elliot.

Nancy was predeceased by her partner and husband of 66 years, Donald, parents Leonard and Ellen Hutt, brothers Lloyd Hutt and Gerald Hutt, sister-in-law Shirley Hutt, and brother-in-law Robert Kimpe.

A Memorial Service for Nancy McDonald will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022, at 1:00 pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave), with a celebration of life tea to follow.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Crystal Creek Community Hall (44044 AB-670, Grande Prairie, AB, T8X 4H3).

Sending condolences to the McDonald family. I spent the odd weekend with Brenda and Barb when we were young kids and later in life whenever we crossed paths she always gave me a big smile and hello. She was a warm and wonderful lady and will be missed by all who knew her. Hugs to everyone.

Nancy has become part of my family history. When I and my sister Joy stayed with Nancy and her family for several weeks (our grandmother was sick) Nancy taught me to bake cookies! Every Saturday it was my job to bake dozens of different cookies!! I got my love of baking from Nancy! I have told this this story to my children and grandchildren!! On one visit to Nancy and Don, I told Nancy how much I appreciated her teaching me to bake. Also that I had told this to my children! She laughed! Nancy will be remembered by myself, my children and my grandchildren. She was a wonderful, beautiful lady!
