Obituary For Muriel Jean Sidney "Peggy" Day
We are saddened to announce that Muriel Jean Sidney “Peggy” Day passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2026, in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 87 years.
Peggy was born on March 31, 1938, in Grande Prairie. She was raised there and graduated from Grande Prairie High School. After high school, she went to Edmonton to obtain her teaching certificate from the University of Alberta. At age 19, she began teaching in La Glace. Peggy also taught in Sexsmith and Grande Prairie for a number of years and is fondly remembered by many of those students. She was married and raised her family in Buffalo Lakes, all while taking courses through GPRC. These studies enabled her to finally achieve her goal of completing a full Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta.
Peggy was well known for her exceptional handiwork skills, from sewing to knitting to crocheting. She was rarely seen without some form of work in her hands. Peggy clothed and warmed countless children and babies with beautiful sweaters and blankets. Her grandchildren were especially proud to wear their “Grandma Peggy” sweaters at every opportunity. She passed on her creative nature and skills to her children and ingrained in them the value of hard work.
In the last years of her life, Peggy focused on her children and grandchildren, spending a lot of time with them. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Peggy is survived by her children, Terri (Darrel) Hansen, Glenda (Gerald) Schwemler, Lois (Berry) Hunt, Murray (Ana) Samuelson, and Joan Samuelson; grandchildren Debbi (Dave), Adam (Alexis), Matthew (Kate), Sarah (Tim), Tara, Tina, Brett, Cory (Janessa), Cayli (Patrick), Kazin, Keenan (Brenna), Zack, Ashe, Logan, and bonus grandson Cash; great-grandchildren Jasper, Ira, Cashton, Parker, Madison, Atticus, Evelyne, Winnifred, Jayna, Logan, Mason, Alexis, and Blakely; sisters Laraine (Albert) Rohne and Marilyn Bloxham; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Isabell, and siblings Joan, Blair, and Sandy.
A memorial service to celebrate Peggy’s life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave). Following the service, Peggy’s family invites you to a luncheon in Oliver’s Tea Room.
