Obituary For Mary Torgerson

It is with deep sadness that the family of Mary Torgerson, wishes to announce her passing on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 82 years.

Mary was born on April 20, 1939, in the family home at Coaldale, AB. At the age of 3, the family moved to a homestead west of Hythe, AB, where they farmed. Mary lived there until her marriage to Abraham Dyck on June 10, 1961. They had five children that they raised between Alberta and the Okanagan in BC. Mary was a natural care giver, and at the age of 46 she went back to school to pursue her passion and become an LPN. She then moved to Grande Prairie and bought a house in 1985. Mary spent the rest of her career working in long term care in various places including at MacKenzie Place, at a Dawson Creek senior home, and in home care. During this time Mary met and married Torger Torgerson.

Mary and Torger were married for almost 30 years. They enjoyed camping and travelling together and visited many places including Norway, Alaska, Minnesota, and the Okanagan. They also loved spending time with family and singing. Over the years they attended many weddings, birthdays, sports events, and funerals. They experienced all the ups and downs of life together.

Mary was kind, compassionate, forgiving, welcoming, hard-working, and had a wonderful sense of humour. She had a heart for the underdog. She would make friends and joke with people wherever she was, including with the paramedics in the ambulance on her way to the hospital.

Mary enjoyed many hobbies including painting, knitting, baking, gardening, picking berries, puzzles, and singing with family.

Mary will be sadly missed by her husband Torger Torgerson; children: Trudy Burdess, Donald Dyck (Mary), Beverly Gliege, and Randall Dyck; step-children: Doug (Bonnie) Torgerson, Teryl (Herman) Schollaardt, Carmen (Lynn) Torgerson, and Norine (Barry) Sawatsky; grandchildren: Chelsey (Patrick) Brown, Stephan (Sheena) Burdess, Aliesha (Carson) Gliege, Erika Dyck, Emily Dyck, Jayden Dyck, Stephanie Dyck, and Matthew Dyck; great- grandchild Hadley Brown; many step-granchildren and great-granchildren; as well as many friends and colleagues.

Mary was predeceased by her parents John & Justina Lowen; sons David Dyck and Robert Dyck; brothers Henry and George Lowen; brothers in-law Allan Wiebe, Walter Suschynski, Lawrence Pierson, David Dyck, Alan Dyck, Henry Bergen, Herman Frantzen, and John “Jack” Hillis; sisters in-law Ruth Lowen, Tina Bergen, Christine Frantzen, Ellsie Hillis, and Valerie Griffith; as well as many other extended family members.

Due to COVID restrictions a private viewing/service will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021.

My mother and I went out for a walk one day last Fall and crossed paths with Torger, Mary and their family so we had a happy conversation. We were together one Christmas and I commented on her beautiful apron next thing I knew she had made one exactly the same only a different pattern. Then she always made Doug these awesome cookies and he would say these are mine don't touch, Mary made them especially for me. Mary was talented in so many ways.
