We are saddened to announce that Mary Lewchuk, resident of Spirit River, AB, passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Pleasant View Lodge in Spirit River at the age of 89 years.

Mary was born on March 16, 1937, on the Lewchuk family farm, the eighth of ten children. She attended the White Mountain one-room schoolhouse with her siblings. Mary lived and worked on the farm, exploring the river valley and tending to her animals, as well as her garden. Throughout her entire life, she was very involved in the Spirit River community.

Mary was affectionately eccentric, sassy, stubborn, loving, and sweet. She particularly enjoyed storytelling, music, and chatting. In her spare time, she could be found thrift shopping, creating braided rugs and baskets, foraging, walking in nature, or making cabbage rolls.

Mary will be deeply missed by her many nephews, nieces, and extended family.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Pleasant View Lodge and Spirit River Hospital for their years of caring for Mary.

A funeral service will be held in the late spring of 2027.
