Obituary For Mary Elizabeth Hamilton

Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, resident of Spirit River, AB, passed on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the Central Peace Health Complex in Spirit River at the age of 75.

We are so grateful to her compassionate and caring nursing colleagues at the hospital, as well as Dr. Eva Kitagawa, who ensured her final days were spent with dignity, love, comfort, and compassion.

Fittingly, a woman with the biggest heart around was born on Valentine’s Day, 1946, in Calgary, AB. She grew up in a loving family - one of 4 sisters - and her musical parents filled her childhood with music (and music lessons!), and family outings to their cabin south of Calgary, creating many fond memories for her.

Mary had the trip of a lifetime with her family in 1959, when her parents took a sabbatical from their jobs and the whole family travelled overseas to Europe for a year to visit extended family and tour several countries. She loved to share the stories and experiences she had on that trip.

Mary became a Licensed Practical Nurse shortly after graduating high school, and her hard-working nature, genuine compassion for others, and willingness to talk to anyone, made her excel at her job. During her 52 year career as a nurse, she worked at several Alberta hospitals: Calgary, Didsbury, Fort Vermilion and Spirit River, as well as spending 18 years at the Grand Forks Hospital in southern B.C.

Her sense of humor was well known to all and was part of her personality right to the end. She especially loved to spend time teasing, and being teased by her loving nephews: David, Paul, Chad, and Troy, and niece Michelle. Their banter at family gatherings always kept everyone laughing and is something we will all miss.

Mary is survived by her two loving daughters Kathie Roy of Spirit River, and Shirley (Gary) Schertzer of Ottawa, ON; her grandchildren: Kendra Roy, Molly Schertzer and Adam Schertzer; sister Patricia Brogden, of Priddis, AB. She is remembered as Aunty Mary to her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She is fondly known as Granny to several children of family friends. If there was a young child in the room, our mom was the first to be down on the floor to play with them!

Mary was predeceased by her parents Mollie (Pierce) and Harry Hamilton; step-mother Eileen (Campbell) Hamilton; and sadly, two of her sisters Gwen Hamilton, and Sharon Davis - passed away just a few short months ago.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mary’s memory may be made to Alberta Hospice Palliative Care Association (110, 105 12 Ave SE, Calgary, AB, T2G 1A1).
