Obituary For Marilyn Lawless
Marilyn passed away at home on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon on February 2, 1959, to Ronald and Rosalie Lawless. She grew up in Blanc-Sablon as the youngest daughter of 11 sisters and 3 brothers.
She had an eventful upbringing on the East Coast, living a life many read about in stories. Whether it was a never so simple trip to the brook for buckets of water; which were “accidentally” spilled on more than one occasion just so she would have an excuse to go back. Or perhaps fishing on the Atlantic with her family, or maybe even working with dog-sled teams. Whatever it was she was doing, she always provided an effort level that made her almost legendary. A reputation that preceded her in life, as people admired her strength, and what seemed like an unlimited level of energy that never seemed to run out.
She enjoyed being active from a very young age; sports were welcome, whether it was ringette, slow pitch, or broomball—not basketball as it was not rough enough for her—and eventually soccer. She grew many long lasting and wonderful friendships through her activities, which continue to this day. Marilyn eventually took over the family store from her father and ran it until the day she chose to make the move out west.
She decided to follow her sister Rita to Grande Prairie. It was here that she met her husband Kurt Roth. They had 2 boys, Costain and Michael, and also helped guide several nephews and nieces as their own (Corey, Nadine, Chase and Morgan).
Marilyn was a truly great person, who left a lasting impression on anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a passionate and fiercely loving person who cared deeply for her family, whether they were born into or found their way into it.
She will be greatly missed by her husband Kurt Roth, her sons Costain Lawless (Stephanie) and Michael Lawless (Karin), and her granddaughters Rosalie and Samantha, whom she lived with. As well as her sisters Melita Letto (Donald) of Blanc-Sablon, Odette Burke (Pius) of Flowers Cove, Alice Letemplier of Blanc-Sablon, Theresa Letemplier of Blanc-Sablon, and Rita Levins of Grande Prairie. Brothers and sisters-in-law Sonja (Robert), Fritz and Max (Vreni) from Switzerland. As well as many more nieces/nephews/cousins who all meant the world to her.
She was predeceased by her parents Ronald and Rosalie Lawless, sisters Celestine Jones, Marie Lavallee, Antoinette Letemplier, Yvette Lawless, Helen Pottle, Sheila Bernice, and brothers Leo Lawless, Thomas Lawless, Joseph and in-laws Heidi and Fritz Roth.
Marilyn will be sadly and greatly missed beyond words, and will never be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 3:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Church (10404 102 St) in Grande Prairie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church (http://saintjoseph.ca/) or to a charity of one’s choice.

Dear Kurt and family, Please accept our sympathy on Marilyn's passing. I knew Marilyn as a fellow parent, an enthusiastic ,positive soccer mom and later in her life as a communion minister to friends of ours. With her down- to -earth wisdom ,her laugh and her big heart , she shared hope , humor and care in this ministry. She opened her home to care for my friends' animals when they were away. When Marilyn became sick herself, she showed me what resilience and a positive attitude look like. I am grateful to have known her and I know that her life's example has generated many ripples. May she rest in peace , knowing that she has made a difference in many peoples' lives. Sharon and Dennis Biggs

My sincere condolences to Marilyn's family on the loss of such a lovely woman. I knew Marilyn as a fella parent at St Gerard School and as in my role as a Home Care nurse. I have seldom seen the tenderness towards an aging parent and grand-parent than Marilyn's mother received. It was beautiful and showed the strength of Marilyn's heart.

Marilyn was a one of a kind just awesome person. I will always remember her rolling up to school in her van regularly to bring lunch and the boys heading out to sit with her to enjoy it. She was our parent volunteer on a trip to Montreal after grade 9. The heat was extreme and none of us kids were used to the humidity but our tour guides had a timeline so we weren't allowed to stop for anything. Marilyn told us to keep going and she'd catch up. She dipped into a store, bought as many cold waters as her back pack could hold and by the time we looked back, here came Marilyn running to catch up, carrying a backpack that I'm sure weighed more than she did. She saved the day. Sending lots of love and peace to Costain, Kurt and all the family.
