We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For Marcy Balderston

Marcy Balderston, resident of Sexsmith, passed away peacefully at the age of 61 on September 14th at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 2, 1965, in Dawson Creek to parents George and Janice Maxwell, she was raised on the Peace View Ranch in Cherry Point alongside her five siblings. Her childhood was full of riding horses, chasing cows, and singing with her sisters.

She graduated from Beaverlodge High School and moved to Grande Prairie to attend college, where she met her future husband Kurt at the curling rink. Shortly after, the two were married. They made Sexsmith their home for the next 42 years on their family farm, where they raised their three children, Sarah, Cody, and Sophie.

An avid athlete, Marcy excelled at curling, winning five Alberta provincial titles and one Canadian championship. Like her mother, she was a gifted horsewoman, winning an Alberta gymkhana championship and competing in show jumping at Spruce Meadows. She passed along her love of horses to her children and many other young riders by hosting Pony Club for many years.

As a lifelong Christian, Marcy was always active in her church, served on the board of Refresh Ministries, and was a wonderful friend to so many in her community. She was always sharing her kind, generous heart and smile that lit up the room with everyone she met.

Most of all, she was a dedicated and loving farm wife, mother, and grandmother, whom her grandkids lovingly called “Nanny.” She will be dearly missed by her friends and family, especially her husband, Kurt, children Sarah (Mitch), Cody (Emma) and Sophie (Brett), and grandchildren Posy, Elsie, and Otto.

She was predeceased by her father George Maxwell, mother-in-law Vivian Balderston, nephew Sean Jones, and niece Jill Maxwell.

Her funeral will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, September 25th, 2026, at Christian Fellowship Assembly in Grande Prairie, Alberta (11449-92 St). Fellowship and refreshments to follow.
