Obituary For Louis Guy Martin
With saddened hearts, we share that Louis Guy Martin passed away in the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital on January 14, 2026, at the age of 87.
Lou was born in Assiniboia, SK, on June 18, 1938, to Eugene and Lorraine Martin, the second of four boys. He attended a Catholic boarding school in Saskatchewan and later went to the School of Trades in Toronto. He became a watchmaker and started his career in Dawson Creek, where he met and married his wife, Barbara.
Lou, along with his wife and young family, moved to Fort Nelson, where he opened and operated Lou’s Jewellery Ltd. There, he was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #6390. He spent many hours volunteering and being involved in their activities, from potato planting and pancake flipping to calling bingo. In 1984 Lou and his family moved to Grande Prairie. Here, he continued his professional life, opening jewellery stores in Grande Prairie and Slave Lake.
Lou loved the outdoors and spent many hours camping, boating, and picnicking with family and friends. He was skilled in carpentry and built anything from cupboards to display showcases for his business. He loved holidays and travelling, especially cruising with relatives. He took great pride in his yard and lawn, but his favorite activity was spending time with his family.
Lou cherished his Catholic faith and was considered a kind and gentle man by all who knew him.
He will be dearly missed by Barbara, his wife of 60 years, and his children, Barry (Nadine), Debbie (Bob) Boisvert, and Michelle (John) Valen. Grandpa is lovingly remembered by his grandkids: A.J., Tayanne (Darcy), Lori, Callen (Sarah), Katie (Brendin), Jakob (Rachael), Janessa (Eric), Cristine, Kyren, Spencer (Kiernan), Tahlia (Sam), Cory (Candice), Lesa and Rylie. He also leaves behind his brothers, Andy (Nora) and Gene (Cloey), his nieces, nephews and many other relatives.
Lou was predeceased by an infant son, parents Eugene and Lorraine, brother George, and Godson Ian.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (10404 102 Street). Interment will be held at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Avenue & 112 Street), followed by a luncheon at Tranquille Hall in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Please join us.
Memorial donations in Lou’s memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (https://www.saintjoseph.ca/donate/).
