Obituary For Lorne Laverne Rowland
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Lorne Laverne Rowland. Lorne passed away peacefully in Lexington, South Carolina, on March 1st, 2025, at the age of 64.
Lorne Laverne Rowland was born in Spirit River, Alberta, on October 8th, 1960, to Glen and Lorna Rowland, one of their 11 children. As his mother wrote in her book, Lorne arrived as their sixth son, the largest at 7 pounds 10 ounces. His sisters noted he had the Rowland family trademark—a cowlick in his dark hair. Unlike his siblings, his hair stayed dark.
As a child, Lorne could be described as adventurous, defiant, and a prankster. Not sure that ever changed! Lorne loved to compete in sports and was usually the one on the podium. He enjoyed track and field and walked away with many medals, and also excelled as a goalie in hockey.
He continued to develop a love and knowledge of horses after spending time at Uncle Tom and Aunt Gladys’ farm. Although, he did have some hard lessons there, apparently, ruining Uncle Tom’s saddle with a roll of barbed wire was one of them.
High school saw him turn his attention more towards cars. He had a passion for fast, fancy cars and had a vision for how to ‘soup them up’ to make them the fastest and coolest they could be.
From Lorne’s first marriage, he had two beautiful sons, Dusty and Kylee, who he took so much pride in. He also had the privilege of having Shaia come into his life, who he loved as a daughter. In 1990, Lorne was introduced to Shawna Latham by a friend. Shawna quickly became the love of his life, and they married on August 5th, 1995, with their young son, Jaret, and
daughter, Ashlea, by their side as well as their other children.
Lorne and Shawna remained in the Grande Prairie area until Lorne was offered a job with
Quadco in Lexington, South Carolina, in 2002. Together, they built a beautiful home in the
country, and Lorne could once again enjoy the company of his horses as well as their long
walks and time by the pool/hot tub on their deck.
Lorne spent much time on the road with his work and loved what he did. Many of you out there received phone calls during those periods of travel. Lorne loved his family and friends and was always wanting to ‘catch up’ as well as talk about ‘old times.'
Lorne is remembered as someone who deeply loved his family, enjoyed having fun, and always brought laughter to those around him. He had a passion for fast cars, beer, dancing, and even impersonating John Wayne. He had an unmistakable admiration and affection for his mother.
Lorne leaves behind his beloved wife, Shawna; sons Dusty (Robyn), Kylee (Diane), and Jaret (Stephanie); daughters Ashlea and Shaia (Adam); and grandchildren Emmery, Thales, Nelli, and Althea. He also leaves behind two more grandchildren on the way—one from Dusty and Robyn, and another from Jaret and Stephanie.
He is also survived by his sisters Karen, Bonnie (Stu), and Leanne (Ray); his brothers Les (Donna), Ross (Gail), Marvin (Dyan), and Kory (Julia); sister-in-law Mona; as well as a great many nieces and nephews who adored him, and, of course, his special aunts, Dorothy and Gladys.
He was predeceased by his parents, Glen and Lorna Rowland; brothers Doug, Blaine, and Wayne; and brother-in-law, Doug, along with his grandparents and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
His leaving us so suddenly and way too soon will forever leave a huge hole in all our lives. We
will cherish the memories and never forget that twinkle in his eyes and his infectious smile.
Rest now in the arms of the Lord who has watched over you all your life on earth.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 1 pm at People's Full Gospel Assembly (11850 108 St, Grande Prairie, Alberta).
