Obituary For Lillian Marie Hoggarth

Lillian Marie Hoggarth passed away in the early morning hours on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the age of 95 years.

Lillian was the only daughter of Sigvart and Johanna (Larson) Berg and a big sister to her two brothers, Merlin and Roy Berg.

The Berg family, along with hired help, operated a log and lumber mill in the Northfield District, where the children grew up and attended school. At the age of 13, Lillian and her family packed up and moved to the Glen Leslie District. She attended school there and, after school and during summer breaks, helped with work at the sawmill. While Johanna cared for the younger boys, Lillian rode horseback to tend the cattle.

In 1951, Lillian married Mac Hoggarth, and together they moved to Buffalo Lake, settling on the same homestead where Mac’s parents had lived for nine years. Mac and his father later expanded the farming operation. It was on this farm that Lillian and Mac welcomed their only daughter, Shirley, born in December of 1951. Years later, grandchildren were added to their family. David was born in September 1972, and Sharon in December 1977.

Lillian is survived by her daughter, Shirley Patterson (Bob); grandson David; granddaughter Sharon (Stuart); great-grandchildren Alex and Kiana; nephews David and Darren Berg; and sister-in-law Betty Berg.

She was predeceased by her parents, Sigvart and Johanna Berg; her husband, Mac; brothers Merlin Berg and Roy Berg; and sister-in-law Mary Berg.

There will be no formal service for Lillian; however, those who wish are invited to attend a memorial gathering on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Avenue), where memories will be shared, followed by a luncheon.

Memorial donations may be made to the Grande Prairie and District Oldtimers Association (https://gpoldtimers.ca/), in recognition of Lillian’s father filing on land in the area in 1915.

Hello Shirley & Bob, on behalf of the Waldner family, I'd like to send our sincere condolences to you and your family. As a child I remember coming out to Buffalo Lakes to visit your family, it was a wonderful place to visit! Your mom was so kind and your dad would laugh so hard, it would make us all laugh! We were just little girls at the time, but those memories hold a spot in my heart. Your mom will be missed and now she's with her family in Heaven. Sending my love.♥️

I have many memories of your grandma Minnie and mom and dad visiting with the McDonald's in Spirit River. Sorry you and I didn't connect more while I was back in Grande Prairie for a couple of years. I'm back in Three Hills. May you experience God's comfort during this time.
