Obituary For Laurence Edward Chandler

Laurence Chandler, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the age of 89 years.

Laurence was born in Britain in 1932. An only child, he spent his early years in India with his parents, and the rest of his life growing years in England. After obtaining a BA in English, he taught English in Norway, mainly in Oslo. It was here he met his wife Jeannette. While in Oslo, Laurence trained as a Registered Nurse. The family went to Zambia, Africa for 4 years where Laurence taught English to African students. He also taught in Northern Scotland for 5 years before the family immigrated to Canada in January of 1975, settling in Spirit River, AB. They then moved to Grande Prairie in 1986. Laurence worked as a Registered Nurse in Fairview, AB, until he retired.

Laurence was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, hiking, and bird watching; anything outside. He especially liked being out on his own in the bush. His yard was full of fruit trees and flowers; his perennial were a source of pride and enjoyment for him.

He was a well-known sight riding his bike around Grande Prairie, summer and winter. In retirement, he travelled back to the UK several times to bike around Scotland and visit family. Laurence loved to tease and verbally spar with young and old alike. He liked to have the last word.

Laurence will be sadly missed by his wife Jeannette; son William (Gemma); daughter Kari; grandchildren: Jessica, Amanda, Brendan, Brandice, Jennifer, and Nora; as well as 2 great-granddaughters.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 29, 2022, at 10:00am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grande Prairie (10404 102 St.).

Memorial Donations may be made to Parkinson Association of Alberta – Edmonton (12209 86 St. NW, Edmonton, AB, T5B 3H7).

I met Laurence in 1983 as we worked in the Fairview General Hospital and we stayed at the nurses residence. I was all of 20 and a brand new RN. He wasn't beyond teasing me with his dry humour. He was well liked at the hospital. I look back now and realize he was my father's age and at times, he would give me advice. I was about to buy my first car and had so many reservations. He assured me, that I could afford the car but wasn't too sure about my driving. He was missed when he retired and I did often thunk of him as I reflect back to my earlier years. Rest well Laurence. My sympathies to your family

Condolences to the Chandler faimly. I met Laurence early to mid 2,000, we were given the pleasure of servicing his vehicles up at the Petro Canada . I always looked forward to giving him a ride home or trying to convince him he should take a ride rather than walking. Laurence always brought a smile to my face with his British charm and telling me a humorous adventurer's that he taken. After he stopped driving, I would see him walking all over the Avondale area, and once in a while walk right past our new shop. When or where ever I saw him , he would always bring a smile to my soul in the memory of past conversations . RIP Grant Wert Accu-Tech Car Care.

So many memories of a quirky uncle who loved to tease us. Later, after I married, we enjoyed many times and days together. It was fun spending time with such a wise and honest man who loved to share his experiences. A special person who will never be forgotten.

Hi, Jeannette, We just read Laurence's obituary. It is unfortunate that it takes an obituary to learn so many interesting things of a person's life. We only got to know Laurence in his later retirement years. We very much enjoyed our discussions. Please accept our sincere condolences in your loss of a husband, father and friend, Paul and Myrna Lemay
