Obituary For Larry Laurier Joseph Fournier

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, grandpa, brother, and uncle, Larry Fournier, on Thursday, September 14, 2023, in Valleyview, AB, at the age of 72 years. Larry was the third child in a family of ten children. He was born to Laurier Fournier and Olga Fournier (nee Romanycia), on May 18, 1951, in Edmonton, AB. At the age of six, Laurier and Olga moved Larry and his three siblings to the family homestead in Sunset House, AB. Larry grew up in Sunset House and never roamed too far from home, setting down temporary roots in Peace River, Slave Lake, Worsley, Rycroft, Grande Prairie, AB, and Creston BC, before making his way back to Sunset House. After many years of working in the oilfield industry, in 1994, Larry was injured at work, preventing him from working again.

Raised in a family of nine siblings, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, family was everything to Larry. Family reunions were the perfect time for them to get together and Larry was generally on the organizing committee, ensuring the events were frequent and well-attended. Larry spent the last few years caring for his mother Olga, until she was moved to care in 2022.

Larry had a way of bringing a little sunshine into people’s hearts with his jokes, good-hearted teasing, witty humour, and generosity. With a talent to captivate an audience, Larry was the best storyteller in the world. Happiest when in nature, Larry shared his passion for fishing and hunting with friends and family, living life to its fullest, rarely letting anything slow him down. He loved debating politics. Bingo and playing cards were of his favourite pastimes and Larry always found a willing partner to join in. When Larry was not tinkering on his acreage, his motor home was always ready for a quick getaway. He spent many years in BC, in Creston area, and Vancouver Island visiting with his good friend and cousin, Denis Lajeunesse. Larry will live on in the hearts of family and friends.

Larry is survived by ex-wife Linda Wasylciw, mother to his two children and wife of 30 years; daughter Tarra; son Doland and daughter-in-law Gwyneth; grandchildren: Tristian, Rhys, Dacian, and Kian. He will be forever missed by his siblings: Fern Fournier-Levasseur and her children, Jason and Jody; Laurier Fournier Jr (Linda) and daughters, Melody and Corina; Gary Fournier and sons, Derek and Dee Jay; Blackie (Florient) Fournier (Teresa); Marlene Fournier and children, Kimberly and Wayne Allen; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family and friends.

Larry was predeceased by his father Laurier Fournier; sister Vivian Fournier-Brown (better known as Granny); and brothers: Elvis Fournier, Terry Fournier, and Brent Fournier.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Larry’s family doctor, Dr. Martin, who cared for him for 27+ years, neurosurgeon Dr. Wong, the many caregivers at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, Valleyview Hospital, and South Valley Residence, for their compassion and professional care.

At Larry’s request there will not be a funeral service. His ashes will be interred at the Valleyview Cemetery, where he will be laid with his beloved brother, Terry Fournier.

Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society AB/NWT Division (200, 325 Manning Road NW, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5).

I am very sad to hear of Larry's death. He is a great man. We had so many wonderful visits with he and Aunt Olga. He was a loving son and caregiver. We shared many fun card games, fun memories, and great times. He brought his mom to share her sisters birthday party at Rabbit Lake. He was a caring loving family member. He was loved, and will be missed greatly. Love Ione Skafte
