Obituary For Kurt Paul Hofmeister

Kurt Hofmeister, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away in his sleep in his own home that he built, as was his wish, in the early morning on Saturday, September 4, 2021, at the age of 92 years.

Kurt was originally from Stuttgart-Feuerbach, Germany. Kurt came to Canada as a young man, wanting to experience other parts of the world. He immediately came to Grande Prairie and remained here the rest of his life.

He was a very gifted machinist and loved being able to fix things that many thought couldn’t be fixed. He worked 21 years for Steel Industries as the manager of the machine shop, and then to P&G for 17 years. His job was to set up the new machine shop and then later he was on the engineering team and headed up the set-up of the sawmill. He had many happy memories of the adventures he had working for them.

Shortly after coming to Grande Prairie, he met the true love of his life, Barbara Redwood. They met at a dance at the Bezanson hall. They had a wonderful 67 plus years together, raising their 3 children, building their house, continuing their love of dancing, and doing lots of travelling - over 26 trips.

His hobbies were woodworking, playing cards, gardening and working in his greenhouse that he also made, wine making with the actual fruit, if any fruit was going bad in the house, you gave it to Kurt and he would always clean it up. As one of the original founders of the German Hall, he loved being the supervisor of the building of the hall. His greatest joy was finding materials for either a deal or donation that would save the club money.

When asked what he would change in his life, he said “nothing”, and wanted to be remembered for being a good dad. His children and grandchildren felt he was the coolest dad. He let you go your own way, yet supported you in everything you did, and was always so proud of what you did.

Kurt was a kind, gentle spoken, hardworking, committed man, who will be missed by all the people who crossed his path. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy of how the life of a man should be lived.

He leaves behind his loving wife Barbara (nee Redwood), and their 3 children. Daughter Louise Fischer (Randy Kennedy) and their daughters Amanda and Rebecca. Son Carl Hofmeister and his family: son Christopher Hofmeister (Lizbeth Flores), daughter Chelsea Adler (nee Hofmeister) and Jason Adler, and great-grandchildren Charlotte and Jade. Son Paul (Lucy) Hofmeister and their family: daughter Kate Ecker and Daryl Adrian, great-grandchildren: Vanessa and Evelyn; Candace Hofmeister and Justin Wells, Conrad and Haley Hofmeister, and great-grandchildren Jackson and Brooklyn. He also leaves many nieces and nephews in both Canada and Germany; as well as brother in-law Allan Redwood.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 2:00pm, at the German Canadian Hall, in Clairmont, AB (9819 100 Ave). Coffee and refreshments to follow, in the fellowship of remembering Kurt and celebrating the wonderful, long life that he had.

So sorry for your loss. I did not hear about it until after the memorial. Kurt was a kind and generous man who helped my father on several occasions with advice and actions as when he helped him with his German pension. Sorry I missed attending the memorial. Angela Werner
