We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For Joseph Patrick Daniel
We are saddened to announce that Joseph Patrick Daniel, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the age of 69 years.
Joseph was born on a farm in New Maynooth, ON, on September 6, 1956, to Helen and Basil Daniel. As a child, Joseph loved animals and carried that curiosity and kindness throughout his life.
He later moved to Alberta in 1992, where he began his career as an electrical engineering technologist with Alberta Energy Services (ATCO). During his time working in Vegreville, AB, he met Susan Gabun, the love of his life. They were married on September 11, 1993, and relocated to Bonnyville, AB, where they began their family. In 2014, they moved once more, this time to Grande Prairie. Joseph and Susan shared 32 wonderful years together while raising their three sons, Patrick, Michael, and Adam.
Joseph was known for his kind heart, contagious optimism, and friendly nature. He had a special way of making people feel welcomed through genuine compliments, conversation, and laughter. Everyone who met Joseph was touched by his warmth and positivity.
Joseph had many hobbies and loved exploring new interests whenever something caught his attention. He enjoyed aquariums, fishing, photography, flying kites, making home videos, and playing musical instruments. He especially loved taking pictures and capturing memories with family and friends.
After retiring in 2018, Joseph enjoyed the simple things most: relaxing at home, helping around the house, attending church, and going on daily walks with his family. He also enjoyed good coffee, Baconators, and, above all, Susan’s cooking.
Above everything else, Joseph loved spending time with his family. His caring heart, generosity, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. It was a privilege to have Joseph in our lives, and his memory will continue to live on through the many people he loved and inspired.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005-107 Ave), preceded by a viewing at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon in Oliver’s Tea Room.
In memory of Joseph, donations may be made to Christian Fellowship Assembly (https://cfachurch.ca/give).

Like everyone, we were heartbroken when we heard of Joe's sudden passing. Joe and Susan were among the first friends we had when we moved to Bonnyville and our kids practically grew up together. Simply put, Joe was one of the nicest people you could ever meet, quietly spoken but with a rapier wit and almanac-like bank of knowledge that he would gladly share. We will miss Joe and he and his family will be in our prayers.

Lawrence and Elaine Svitich are so saddened to hear of Joseph's passing. Joseph was training as an electrical technologist in Vegreville with Lawrence. I recall we had them over for a Ukrainian meal and enjoyed their company. We lost touch with them when they moved to Bonnyville. Susan did stay in touch with Christmas cards and pictures of their boys. May God be with you and your families as you journey on. Sending prayers to you at this very difficult time. Hugs, Lawrence & Elaine from Vegreville.

Joe, Dan D, Kevin D, Bob M, Dave R, Trev H, P Smitty, Mike T, and Marty T, grew up together during our teenage years. Our playground was EAST YORK, and Canadian Martyrs was home base. We rode our bikes, adventurous walks through the trails of the DON while some played guitars. We were a tight group, and as life takes us in different directions making our own paths, I strongly remember when Joe moved to Alberta, we kept contact for a few years, and slowly our contact waned. I had not seen Joe for 15 years or more, when a 2018 chance encounter in Mexico put us face to face again, he was kind and friendly to me immediately, while it took me an overnight reflection to be kind and friendly in return. The next day he deliberatley sat next to me at lunch and shared stories of his wife and children, I felt so close to him again in that moment. Joe was proud and happy in the life he made for himself and his family. I now regret losing contact with him as I feel it would have made my life richer with him in it. God Bless you Joe, I will treasure the many times you and I rode our bikes to Center Island, laughing and watching people going by as we had lunch on the hill. We made The Beatles' "Fool on the Hill" our song as we watched the world in front of us. Thank you Joe for spending years of your life with me/us (all the East Yorkers). God Bless your family and give them strength, you will be missed by many, especially Susan, Patrick, Michael, and Adam, brothers Dan, Kevin, and Al, and your mom Helen with whom you would come from Alberta to Ontario to spend time with.
