Obituary For John Zahara

John Zahara, of Culp, AB, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the age of 89 years.

John was born January 1, 1935, on the farm in Culp AB, to Sam and Anasia Zahara, and was the second eldest of six children.

John attended school in Culp, and then Girouxville until Grade 9 when his father passed away. He then took over managing the farm, which remained his passion. He and Betty (nee Smith) were married in 1958, and raised their children on the farm.

As a young man, John enjoyed playing ball, attending dances, and socializing. Throughout his life he loved to work with his hands, and filled his spare time building and repairing equipment in his shop. He was an active and respected member of various community organizations in the Smokey River area.

John will be missed by his wife Betty; children: Jason from Bowen Island, Trevor (Euna Kang) from Edmonton/Vernon, and Shannon from Edmonton; grandchildren: Liam Zahara from Vancouver, Kaylah Zahara from Weyburn, SK, and D’Arcy Mulligan from Edmonton; sisters Mary Cook and Anne Radix; and brother Roger Zahara.

John was predeceased by his father Sam (Simion) in 1951; mother Anasia in 2008; brother George William in 2003; sister Lena (Irvin) Kopp in 2007; and granddaughter Risa Mulligan in 2019.

A viewing for family members occurred on Sunday, January 7, 2024, in Grande Prairie, AB, followed by cremation. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 2:00pm at the farm in Culp, AB, where family and friends will be welcome.
