Obituary For John Bernard Case
Enid Case, née Clarke (July 8, 1940 – October 31, 2025)
and
John Bernard Case (March 12, 1935 - November 4, 2025)
The family of John and Enid would like to share the news of their peaceful passing at home, just days apart, surrounded by family.
Born in Lancashire and Sheffield, they met as a newly qualified Specialist General surgeon and a Registered nurse and married in 1963. In January 1970, they immigrated to a shockingly cold and remote Grande Prairie, AB (population about 12 000), with their 3 young children. As the first surgeon in northwestern Alberta, Dr. Case attended everything from orthopaedics to neurosurgery to obstetrics and beyond. Enid managed the business of the medical practice and the family home.
They retired to Qualicum Beach in 2004, where Enid renovated, gardened and walked, among many other activities. John enjoyed classical music and poetry and wrote his memoirs in a 3-book series.
They are survived by their children David (Annette), Douglas (Michelle), and Catherine (Gary), and grandchildren Kirsti (Chris), Tyler (Laura), Michaela, Mackenzie, Nikita (Tanner), Brianna (Justin) and Alexander.
At the request of Enid and John, there will be no memorial service.

John, along with colleagues Vic Martens and Herb Janzen, helped found the first formal University of Alberta surgical training program for rural family physicians starting in 1992. As the first trainee, I appreciated the professionalism and compassion John brought to his relationships with patients and his health care colleagues; his mentorship was the foundation for the successful surgical practice of a number of rural family physicians. My sympathies to the extended family; rest well, John and Enid.

Dr. Case was a very kind and loving Dr. I worked many hours with him in the minor OR removing skin lesions etc. Have so many special memories of his kindness, and professionalism in Emerg. Even after retirement, he loved to come back and work a few hours. He told me he missed GP's blue skys, and of coarse his family. Sad to hear of their passing, but nice they went together.

Dr. Case was a kind and gentle man who was very respectful to all. It was easy to see that the profession he chose was a job that he loved. I enjoyed the days that I got to assist him doing minor surgical procedures. He delivered my two babies by C-section and I trusted that I was in good hands. He was generous to us as Staff every Christmas with a treat he enjoyed, Quality Steet chocolates. Rest in peace. Sharon Bohnet
