Obituary For John Alex Melnichuk

John Melnichuk, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023, at the age of 81 years.

John was born on October 21, 1942, in Kelowna, BC, to Makar and Mary Melnichuk.

The family moved to the Ellison District, in the Okanagan Valley, where they had an apple orchard. John spent most of his early years helping in the orchard.

John attended Ellison Primary School, then went to Rutland Senior Secondary School, where he graduated. He took an early interest in shorthand, which led him to enroll in secretarial school in Kelowna. From there he moved to Edmonton, AB, and found a part-time job as an official court reporter. In 1966, he was offered a full-time position as an official Court Reporter in Grande Prairie. He was employed at the Court House until he retired in 2000.

John was a fun-loving husband to Lydia and father to Christina. He did everything with Christina, including skiing, tobogganing, biking, etc. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, and hiking. He was very kind, loving, helpful, and you could always depend on him.

John was a member of the Swan City Rotary Club for quite a few years. He enjoyed volunteering and was also involved with the annual Terry Fox Run.

John will be sadly missed by his loving wife Lydia; daughter Christina; brothers Mike and Roy, along with their families; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and close friends; especially Tim and Tessie Foster and family.

John was predeceased by his father Makar Melnichuk, and his mother Mary Melnichuk.

The family would like to thank Dr. James Pope for his exceptional care over the years; and the excellent care from the ER nurses in Unit 14 and 23, especially Charity and Suravi. Thank you.

A Viewing will be held on Monday, November 20, 2023, at 6:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). A Service will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at 10:00am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grande Prairie (10404 112 St.). Interment to follow at Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Ave. and 112 St.).

Memorial Donations may be made to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital (11205 110 St. Grande Prairie, Alberta, T8V 4B1), St. Joseph Catholic Church (10104 102 St. Grande Prairie, Alberta, T8V 2W3), or to a charity of your choice.
