Obituary For Joe Dumas

Joseph Hervé René Jocelyn Dumas passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025, in Grande Prairie, Alberta, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather, a proud Canadian Navy veteran, a gifted chef, and a man of deep and unwavering faith. Joseph’s life was marked by service, generosity, laughter, and love.

Joseph served honourably in the Canadian Forces (Navy) as a Leading Seaman, dedicating 15 years of faithful service to Canada from October 1976 to December 1980, and from June 1983 to September 1994. In recognition of his long and faithful service, he was awarded the Canadian Forces’ Decoration (C.D.), an honour bestowed upon members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have completed twelve years of service under honourable conditions. The values he carried from his military career—discipline, commitment, and selfless service—guided him throughout every season of his life.

Following his naval service, Joseph continued his calling to serve others through many years of work in restoration, helping families and communities rebuild during difficult times. He was also a talented and passionate chef who found deep joy in cooking, especially for his church family. Preparing meals was one of the ways Joseph expressed love—every dish served with generosity, warmth, and his unmistakable sense of humour.

Joseph was known for his funny, playful, and loving spirit. He was always joking, always smiling, and always ready to lift the hearts of those around him. His laughter was contagious, and his lighthearted nature brought comfort and joy wherever he went.

Faith was the foundation of Joseph’s life. He trusted deeply in the Lord and stood firmly on God’s promises through every trial, including times of illness and hardship. His faith was a source of strength not only for himself, but also for his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Joseph was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Josefa S. Dumas. His children: Jason Welch, Stephanie Badin (Kurt Badin), Matthew Merryweather (Kandiace Smith), and James Merryweather (Lea Merryweather). He was a proud grandfather to Aubrey Badin, Emery Badin, Bentley Merryweather, Madeleine Merryweather, and Trevor Merryweather.

Joseph is also lovingly remembered by his family in Quebec: his sister, Ghislaine (Michel); his brothers, Benoit (Francine), Dany (Pascale), and Réal (Nancy); Martine and Manon; and his cherished nieces and nephews: Patrick, Valérie, Paméla, Stéphane, Catherine, Geneviève, Claure, Henri, Félix-Olivier, Florence, Léonard, Alexandre, Cynthia-Ève, and Maxime.

He was predeceased by his parents, Pauline and Hervé; his sisters, France (Michel) and Carmen (Gaétan); his stepfather, Martial; and his beloved son, Kyle Dumas.

A funeral service celebrating Joseph’s life will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Abundant Life Church of Grande Prairie (9932 91 Avenue). The service will reflect Joseph’s strong faith, deep love for family, and lifelong dedication to serving others. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion will be in attendance to honour Joseph with a White Cross and poppies. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca). Cards and messages of condolence and memories may also be given to the family and are deeply appreciated.

Joseph will be profoundly missed, but his legacy of faith, service, laughter, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. We take comfort in knowing he is now at peace, resting in the arms of Jesus.

Joe was truly one of kind. I'll never forget our days together at Emmanuel in New Westminster. We loved having him over socially and his character and sense of humour led to many fond memories. He will be deeply missed. My heart 💔 and condolences go out to all of his relatives, church family, colleagues and all who were blessed to know him. Rest in peace my friend until we meet again.
