Obituary For Joan Mary Kuss (nee Read)
Joan Kuss, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away Friday, October 27, 2023, at the age of 77 years.
Joan was born December 17, 1945, in Edmonton, AB, to Lena and Stephen Read, and raised in Bashaw, AB.
Joan was a devoted mother who spent all of her spare time watching her children play baseball, hockey, volleyball, basketball and soccer. Joan was also an avid curler, crib, bridge and canasta player. She loved camping and spent every summer at Shuswap Lake with her children, teaching them how to waterski. All of her children still meet at the lake every year and were fortunate to still drag her along to join in right up until this past summer. Joan loved soaking up the sun at the lake, but mostly loved her time with her children and grandchildren.
Joan never missed watching a curling bonspiel and followed the Brier and Scotties religiously. Joan knew every player and could replay each end of each game.
Joan was a devoted mother and juggled various careers throughout her life. But her greatest venture was spent from 2003 – 2020 working for her son, Stephen, at Advantage Brake and Muffler, until her retirement at age 75. Joan enriched each and every person she came in contact with because of her kindness and calm demeanor.
Joan will be sadly missed by her children: Ken Kuss (Kim Lipszyc and daughter Zoe), Michael Kuss (Kristine Kuss and their children Addyson, Kelly, and Xavier), April Kuss (Gavin Renwick and their children Shaela, Courtney, and Isla), and Stephen Kuss (Lisa Kuss); as well as Joan was survived by her brothers: Dr. Stanley Read (Clemon George), Lynn Read (Mary Read); and numerous relatives and friends.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 3:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

My deepest condolences to Joan's family in the loss of such a proud Mamma and great lady. I met Joan in 2003 when she lived in Elmworth, always cheerful and willing to help in the community or family and friends. Heaven truly gained an angel and I can picture her working to schedule and make everything organized.

Joan holds a special place in my heart. She was a second mom to me. She took me in and offered friendship, support and love. She was a lovely human with a huge heart who gave everything to her family. I'm heartbroken that she is gone and I didn't get to tell her the impact she had on my life. I hope she knew. Love to her family. ❤️

I am so very sorry to hear about Joan's passing. She was a very authentic person with a big heart. She had tremendous patience and had a special way of calming people in tense situations and giving good advice! It was great to see Joan when you were all so good to come to Barbara's Celebration of Life in August. I wish I could have spent more time with her and all of you at that time! You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I hope eventually the pain you feel now will be replaced and you can just treasure all the special memories of Joan (Mom & Gramma). She was a very genuine and special person to me, and all of her children and grandchildren and so many others! God bless all of you and your families!
