Obituary For Jerry Lee Dorscheid

Jerry Lee Dorscheid, resident of County of Grande Prairie, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, June 13, 2025 (Farmers Day).

Jerry was the younger son of Jack and Berniece Dorscheid, brother to Larry and half-sister Myrtle.

Jerry spent his whole life on the family farm east of Grande Prairie in the Glen Leslie area. He spent his high school years in Wapiti Dorm and the year following his graduation working at a garage in Grande Prairie. Following this he returned to the farm and partnered with his dad, uncle and cousins to raise cattle and pigs. Jerry loved all animals, especially cattle and horses. He even tried his hand at bronc riding at the Teepee Creek Rodeo but after getting bucked off on his head decided rodeo life wasn’t for him.

In 1965 he met and married Violet Johnson, together they raised two children, Sheila and Darren. Jerry and Violet would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary later this year.

Jerry was a proud, independent man whose word and handshake was his bond. He loved the country life spending much of his time outside. He also enjoyed poetry, especially Robert Service and Baxter Black’s country life based stories, he even wrote about some of his own life experiences in poetry.

Following his father’s passing Jerry and his brother Larry farmed together. Jerry and Violet outgrew their small home, so a decision was made to build a new home and ranch on their own a few years later. Violet returned to nursing and together they grew their cattle herd to 160 cows before deciding to partially retire in 2001. They spent 6 months in Australia and New Zealand (their dream vacation) taking only a knapsack each, stopping at whatever places took their fancy. Upon their return to the ranch, they gradually reduced their cattle herd to 40 cows. Jerry stayed on the ranch until his health forced him into the Care Center in February 2025.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Violet, daughter Sheila, son Darren (Trudy); four grandsons Alex (AJ), Evan, Chase and Shawn, sister-in-law Rita as well as countless cousins, nieces and nephews. (And his faithful dog Pepper)

He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Berniece, brother Larry, sister Myrtle and parents-in-law Richard and Alice Johnson.

Our sincere gratitude goes to Dr. Pope and Donosa and all his caregivers at Mackenzie Place and GP Care Center, Home Care in the last years of Jerry’s life. A special thank you to Ben, Joan and Ty Jacobson who helped keep Jerry on his beloved ranch.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 23 at 11:00 am at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Ave) luncheon to follow. Jerry loved his blue jeans and farm attire, please feel free to dress accordingly.

Cremation has already taken place; a private burial will take place at a later date.

Memorial Donations may be made to a charity of one’s own choice.

The Service will be taped and available for access one hour after the Service.
