Obituary For Jennie Tomshak Croken
Jennie Croken, a life-time resident and pioneer of Grande Prairie, went to our Lord on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the age of 99 years.
Jennie was born on February 9, 1916 on the family homestead north of Clairmont. She was the oldest of 8 children born to Joe and Nellie Tomshak. She grew up on the homestead and then married Rudy Croken a local grain buyer. They moved into Clairmont to start their family and in 1954 they moved into Grande Prairie. This is where they raised their 6 children. Jennie worked over 25 years with the Grande Prairie Post Office serving many clients over the counter. When she retired, she travelled extensively across the world. She was on all the continents other than the Antarctic. She travelled on a limited budget staying mostly in hostels and travelling with a back pack on her back seeing the world.
She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Josephâ??s Roman Catholic Church, an active member of the CWL, Royal Canadian Legion, a member of the Old Timers Association, Federal and Provincial Liberal member. She was predeceased by her husband Rudy G Croken, daughters Betty Sturek and Teresa Croken; daughter in-law Linda Croken; son in-law Peter Sturek; brothers in-law, Dave Russell, and Tommy Fitzpatrick; brothers Tony, Joe, Albert, and Frank Tomshak; sisters in-law Joyce and Dorothy; parents Joe and Nellie Tomshak, and step-mother Agnes.
She leaves to mourn her loss, children: Gene and Lorrie Croken, Denis Croken, John A. and Elaine Croken, and Ed (Mike) and Pam Croken; sisters Mary Russell and Helen Fitzpatrick; brother Eddie Tomshak; sisters in-law Caroline and Dolly; as well as many more relatives in the surrounding area, Maritimes and Poland. She has 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 5 great great-grandchildren.
A Prayer Service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7:00pm at St. Josephâ??s Catholic Church in Grande Prairie (10404 102 St.).
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 11:00am at St. Josephâ??s Catholic Church.
Memorial donations may be made to Catholic Womenâ??s League (10404 102 St. Grande Prairie, AB T8V 2W3), or to the Grande Prairie Knights of Columbus (mail or drop off donation at St. Josephâ??s Catholic Church 10404 102 St. Grande Prairie, AB T8V 2W3).
