Obituary For Jeffrey Wayne Gatz
It is with great sadness that the family of Jeffrey Wayne Gatz announces his unexpected passing on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the age of 52 years.
Jeff was born in Lethbridge, AB, and spent his childhood in Stavely, AB, where he built lifelong friendships and developed his deep love of sports. He graduated from Claresholm Composite High School before moving back to Lethbridge, where he explored several post-secondary paths before later returning to school to proudly complete his LPN diploma.
Jeff spent the majority of his working years in the grocery industry, where he managed many different departments. He was known for his strong work ethic, quick wit, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Sports were at the centre of Jeff’s life. A phenomenal athlete and teammate, he played hockey in Stavely and Claresholm, American Legion baseball with the Ft. Macleod Royals, and every school sport he could. Some of his family’s fondest memories were of Jeff spending countless hours in the alley pitching baseballs to his dad. Whether playing or watching, sports brought him tremendous joy. He was an incredibly loyal fan of the Calgary Flames and could seemingly recite statistics from nearly any sport at any moment. If Jeff were on your Trivial Pursuit team, victory would be almost guaranteed.
Jeff will also be remembered for his incredible sense of humour. He loved pulling pranks (his favourite target was Mrs. Mac), telling stories, and making people laugh. He had a rare gift for turning even ordinary moments into unforgettable memories, and people were naturally drawn to his warmth, humour, and personality.
Above all else, Jeff loved his family deeply. He shared a special bond with his niece, Chloe, and nephew, Logan, and adored Cali, the family pooch. He treasured time spent travelling with family and friends and greatly valued the relationships he built throughout his life.
Later in life, Blair and Justin became especially important to Jeff. Together, they shared countless memories, laughter, and time together. Blair and Justin, along with their families, were an incredible source of support, friendship, and care for Jeff over the past several years, something he wholeheartedly treasured and appreciated more than words could express.
The past ten years brought many health challenges, and Jeff experienced a significant decline in his health. Though his body eventually gave out, his family finds comfort in knowing he is now at peace and has found eternal rest.
Jeff is lovingly remembered by his parents, Darriel and Eunice Gatz; his sister, Kimberley, and brother-in-law, Andrew; his niece, Chloe; his nephew, Logan; and many extended family members, special aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends.
He was predeceased by both sets of his grandparents.
A celebration of Jeff’s life will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at the Innisfail Cemetery in Innisfail, AB.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada (https://www.kidney.ca/).
Jeff will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Sending condolences and prayers to Mr and Mrs Gatz and Jeff's sister and family, so sorry to hear of Jeff's passing . Jeff was my boss for a few years at superstore, we had lots of laughs and he could always be counted on to come down on the floor every morning to check on us and say hello. But Jeff was more than a boss, he became a friend and even after he left superstore, I would always reach out to see how he was doing and he would do the same. I tried to at least see him around Christmas time, each year. I will certainly miss him and our chats.
