Obituary For Jean Kay McRae

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Kay McRae the morning of April 30, 2023. She passed peacefully in her sleep.

Affectionately known to everyone simply as Kay, she was born September 4, 1940 in Grande Prairie, Alberta to Dorothy and Cecil Allen. She was raised in Bezanson, Alberta alongside her sister, Donna.

Kay was always a voracious reader and music lover. On August 23, 1958 Kay married Donald Frank McRae. Together had 3 surviving biological children; Al, Terry and Nancy. She also cared for numerous foster children through the years including having guardianship for Sonya. Kay had a nurturing nature that lent itself well to her roles as stay-at-home mom, foster parent, gardener, home cook and baker. She also sewed, knit and crocheted.

In her later years, her attention shifted to working Farmer’s Markets selling honey and staying connected to family, friends, neighbours and the community around her on their acreage near Caroline, Alberta. She loved children and was always happiest when with her kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and neighbouring young people.

After the passing of Don in 2014, came an unfortunate dementia diagnosis that led to her final move to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to be closer to her daughter and family. Kay spent her last few years in the excellent care provided by Oliver Lodge.

She will be loved and missed by those whose lives she entered.

Kay was predeceased by her parents - Cecil and Dorothy Allen, infant daughter - Mary Jean, and husband - Don McRae.

She is survived by; sister - Donna Engelbert and family, children - Donald Allan, Terry (Marilyn), Nancy (Jim Cruse) as well as Sonya Auger and family, grandchildren - Kent, Cora, Blake and Morgan and great-grandchildren - Hannah and Maverick.

As a breast cancer survivor, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society in Kay’s name.
