Obituary For Janice Marie Fleming

Janice Marie Fleming passed away, surrounded by love and family, on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 in Grande Prairie, AB at the age of 70 years.

Janice was born July 21, 1953 in Moose Jaw, SK and was a treasured daughter to Dave and June Carpenter. She was the second eldest in a vibrant family that included her siblings: Ken (Tracey) Carpenter, Bill (Deb) Carpenter, Susan (Gerry) Rankin, Nancy (Orin) Sand and Carol (Blaine) Bittorf.

Moving to Slave Lake in 1964, Janice spent her life raising her family in the place she called home. She shared 26 years as a partner and a lifetime of friendship with her beloved, Dean (William Dean) Barkwell, and their little fur babies, Pumpkin and Tom.

Janice was loved by her children: Tracy (Kelly) Persson, David Fleming, Angela (Mike) O'How and Katherine (Jason) Fleming. She was also a loved grandmother by grandchildren: Tyler (Layna), Josh, Mackenzie (Darian), Evan, Kayty, Arnold, Savannah, Robyn (Morgan), Madison, Kennedy and Kellen.

Janice was predeceased by her baby daughter Shannon Marie, parents Dave and June Carpenter, her beautiful sister-in-law Kathy Carpenter and her loving brother-in-law Orin Sand.

Her spirit is carried on by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who loved their Auntie Jan dearly.

A lover of nature and literature, Janice enjoyed gardening, reading novels, and spending precious time with Dean, her mother, children, grandchildren and friends. Her favourite haven was her lakefront spot at Assineau, AB, where she spent nearly 40 summers creating lasting memories filled with sunsets, campfires, starlit nights, laughter and annual birthday celebrations. Thank you to the Schafer family for the incredible spot she called home for so many months each year. Both Grandmas will forever be missed.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the High Prairie Hospital, Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, Dr. Bolton, Dr. Purich, the sweet nurses of Unit 21, Stars Air Ambulance and Brenda Pelland McIntosh for your compassionate care during Janice's final days. They would also like to thank the friends and family who supported them during the past few weeks caring for their pets and homes, to sending messages of love and prayers.

Janice's memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. We love and miss her so much already, Jan/Mom/Grandma/Auntie/Friend. Her legacy will live on through those she loved and the remarkable lives she created.

Janice had a love for all flowers, saying each flower was like people - beautiful and unique in their own way. If you prefer a donation in place of flowers, please send it to Animal Rescue Committee of Slave Lake (arcofsl.com), or Stars Air Ambulance (stars.ca/get-involved/ways-to-donate/) in her name.

A private Celebration will be held in May with family and close friends.
