Obituary For Helen Elizabeth Peebles

Helen Elizabeth Peebles, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Mackenzie Place at the age of 94 years.

Helen was born on March 13, 1932, in Calais, AB. In 1935, the family left Calais for Westmark, and in 1939, settled into their own home on the homestead, which their dad, John Schulz, had purchased for ten dollars. When Helen finished school, she moved to a boarding house in Grande Prairie and got a job at a dress shop. In 1950, she met Alton at a dance. They married in November 1951 and moved to the farm in Heart Valley. They stayed there until 1966, when they relocated to Grande Prairie.

Helen had a great sense of humor. She was spunky, resilient, and thrifty to a fault. Her house was always immaculate, and she wore running shoes inside “so she could move faster.” In her spare time, she enjoyed embroidering and taught the craft to her girls when they were young. Helen doted on the love of her life, Alton. She kept busy with having four children in five years on the farm and then another son later in life.

Helen will be sadly missed by her son, Brian (Yvonne) Peebles; her daughters, Rita (Joe) Gara and Terry Cadieux; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alton Peebles; her son, Kevin Peebles; her daughter, Janet Belcourt; and one grandson.

An ‘Ode to Helen’ will be held at a family reunion on Saturday, May 9, 2026, in Red Deer, AB.
