We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For Hartmann Hans Nagel
It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Hartmann Nagel, much-loved Husband, Father, Grandpa, Opa, and Uncle. Hartmann, a resident of Clairmont, AB, formerly of Woking, AB, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the age of 91 years.
Hartmann was born on August 16, 1934, to a pioneer farm family in the LaGlace area of the Peace Country in Northern Alberta. When Hartmann was five, the family moved to a farm in the Woking area. Hartmann and his son, Rick, farmed there until they sold it and retired in 2009.
Hartmann attended the Vermilion School of Agriculture from 1958 to 1960, and during his second year, was elected President of the Student Council. After graduation, Hartmann married the love of his life, Eileen Szabados, who had also been attending the same college. A few years later, the family expanded to include their son, Richard, and daughter, Lori.
As the years went by, the farm grew, primarily farming grain, although at times, Hartmann included oilseeds, fescue, buffalo, and even saskatoons.
Over the years, Hartmann was very involved in his community, church (St. John’s Lutheran Church of Northmark), the school board, the Board of Trade and Recreation, and most prominently, in farm organizations. He was active in the Farmers’ Union of Alberta (Unifarm). His hard work and abilities led to his election as Vice President of Unifarm, then on to President, a post he held for three years. In 1993, his knowledge and ambition led him to run provincially as the Liberal Party candidate. The election was lost by only a few votes, a testament to his renown and popularity with the rural population of the Peace Country.
His accomplishments were many in Alberta Unifarm and in 1995, Hartmann was appointed by the Governor General in Council to the Office of Assistant Commissioner of Alberta and BC for the Canadian Grain Commission. He served in this role for nearly 10 years until his retirement in 2004. His intimate and extensive knowledge of western agriculture proved to be a great benefit to the government of Canada and to the western region of the country. He dedicated a lifetime to supporting the democratic process, as well as working towards achieving unity and cooperation in the farm industry in Western Canada.
After selling the farm in 2009, Hartmann and Eileen moved across the road onto his dream property, which together they developed into a beautiful retirement acreage. They enjoyed it for 15 years, spending many happy days and weekends in the company of family and friends.
Hartmann and Eileen recently celebrated a huge milestone: their 65th wedding anniversary, surrounded by their beloved family, which is what he loved best of all.
A heartfelt thank you to the many caregivers at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and Prairie Lake Hospice, who were so kind and attentive in his final days.
As requested, a small, immediate family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate Hartmann’s life.

Coach
To Ric and your family our deepest condolences. Your dad was a great and wise man. We still remember your dad telling us that our son Michael couldn't start the tractor. The look on your dad's face was priceless when he did!
