It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gwen Smith, long time resident of Grovedale, AB, on Monday, October 30, 2023, in Grande Prairie, AB, after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 74 years.

Gwen had strong ties to our community, she volunteered at Penson school, Firebells, REA, Community Hall and has been instrumental with getting the local cemetery started and volunteered many years as treasurer. She was a devoted grandmother, taking in music recitals, 4H, skiing, dance, hockey, baseball, rugby and volleyball, and often drove the kids to their events. Gwen loved the outdoors, and her favorite moments were spent in her garden, hiking, camping, quadding, time in the mountains and at the cabin. She especially enjoyed time with family.

Gwen is survived by her husband Dale Smith and children: son Gary (Sherry) Smith, daughter Terry Ann Logan (Jay Salter), son Todd (Sheila) Smith; grandchildren: Blaine (Kaylyn) Smith, Dylan Smith, Jason (Mckenna) Smith, Jenna (Quinton) Abel, Marissa (Kevin) Wall, and Samantha Smith (Ryan Stephenson); her great-grandson Finlay Smith; and fondly remembered by Terry Ann’s step grandchildren: Brooke, Madison, Morgan, Harrison and Rosalyn; siblings: Maddie Jebb, Jackie (Wayne) Connell, Charlie (Bernice) Penson, Marlene (Jim) Harper, and Sandra (Ivan) Tissington; sister’s in-law: Lorraine (Ambrose) Lewis, and Barb (Raymond) Newman; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Gwen was predeceased by her parents Jack Cragie Penson and Dorothy Mary Penson (nee Crerar); siblings: Don (Shirley) Penson, Norma (Dick) Steinke, Les Penson, Francis Penson, Lyle (Josephine) Penson, and Norine (Jack) Arlint; and brother in-law Joe Jebb; as well as sister in-law Rose Penson.

We would like to give a special thank you to the staff at the Prairie Lake Hospice for their great care of Gwen.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer of 2024, date to be announced later.
