Obituary For Grace Doreen Newman Dana

Grace Doreen Dana (Newman) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie, after a brief illness, at the age of 90 years.

Grace was born at home to Paul and Annie Newman (Moulton) on April 29, 1926 1926 in Strathclair, Manitoba. After surviving the dirty 30’s in Manitoba, the family packed up and headed west in 1940 to homestead in the Goodwin area. It was there she met and later married Gene Dana on May 6, 1943.

Grace worked at the Goodwin Store until her and Gene started their family in 1945. Grace then stayed at home to raise the family, take care of the home front, do the books, and help look after the crews of their company, Dana Contracting.

In their early years together, Grace and Gene were known to have large gatherings at their home after dances at the Goodwin Hall. Grace was sure to be found in front of the piano or playing the harmonica or accordion until the wee hours of the morning.

Later in life, you were always welcome at the family home down the Forestry Trunk Road where you were always treated with Grace’s homemade goodies.

In Grace’s downtime, she enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading and playing her music.

Gene passed away on June 15, 1995 and Grace remained in Goodwin until 1996. She then purchased a home in Grande Prairie. There she lived until 2009 when she relocated to Aurora Court, where she lived until her death. She always made new friends wherever she was.

Grace is survived by her sister Eleanor Krause of Grande Prairie, 4 children: Wayne (Evelyn) Dana of Valleyview, Lynne (Ken) Fjellner of Valleyview, Chris (Kathy) Dana of Sturgeon Heights, and Pat (Brian) Given of DeBolt. Grace’s legacy will also live on in her 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Grace was predeceased by her parents Paul and Annie; husband Gene; brothers Stan, Joe, Melford and Percy; sisters: Vera, Edna, Ileene, and Irene; daughter in-law Dorothy; as well as numerous other family members and close friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 2:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

Memorial donations may be made to the Grande Spirit Foundation (9505-102 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 7G9).
