Obituary For Gordon Douglas Nikkel
Gordon Douglas Nikkel, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2025, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with illness. He was 65, just days shy of his 66th birthday.
Born in Calgary AB, on July 13, 1959, Gordon grew up in Lethbridge. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Katherine Nikkel and is survived by his daughters Tabatha Neufeld, Chelsea Duran, Rakia Pawlowich-Nikkel and Shawna McKay; six grandchildren; his brothers Ron and Vaughn Nikkel; and his sisters Wilma (Neufeld) and Dorothy (Frederic).
From his earliest years, Gordon was captivated by the inner workings of machines. At six, he famously dismantled—and reassembled—a faulty lawnmower engine, foreshadowing a lifetime of mechanical mastery. He put his talents to work on cars, trucks and motorcycles across Lethbridge and Northern Alberta before making Grande Prairie his home. “Go big or go home,” he’d say—an ethos he embodied through generous deeds, “free” advice, and that ever-present twinkle in his eye.
A collector at heart, Gordon amassed model cars, mugs and vintage metal signs, quipping, “They’re my investments.” His dream remained to travel coast to coast in his motorhome, exploring the wide-open roads he so loved.
Family and friends are invited to remember and celebrate Gordon’s life in a brief memorial service at Christ Church Anglican in Grande Prairie (6610 Poplar Drive) on July 23, 2025, at 2:00 pm, with his brother Ron officiating.
“Jesus said, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live.’”
—John 11:25

Dear Family and friends of my first love. I unexpectedly come upon the last of my first love of my life. I was proudly showing off my girls. The shock to my system was heavy, another loss for my girls. Iam sending my bear hugs and love to all that got to know Gordon for his true unique self. It showed in all his girls. Blood runs thick he always said! I still think to this day, how much time was at loss. Iam so sorry to come across the sadest news of my day and year. Always was telling everyone how much of a dare devil the youngest became at birth! Just as her biological daddy was. The fire. The glow. The twinkle in his eyes carried on as he proudly carried himself proud. I got to enjoy getting to know Gord, and seeing his twinkle carry on. I got many stories and funnys! Funny how he picked the 4th. Only I know those intentions from within my heart. He was a man of his word and strong to his beliefs. Henry knew him well, which is where I got to know him for who he was in life. I'll never forget his laughter! It grows within his three beautiful children. I knew our daughter was going to be beautiful before she was born, as her 2 older sisters were. Iam proud of the family I chose for her. Thank You Gordon, for being the father u always wanted to be. Thank you for offering the 3 girls the best life could throw. I know! RIP daddy gord!! RIP! It's your turn!
