Obituary For Fredrik Michael Horneland

It is with great sorrow we announce that Fredrik Michael Horneland, resident of Grande Prairie, AB passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Grande Prairie Regional Hospital one day short of his 94th birthday.

Fred was born January 31, 1930 on the farm near Valhalla Centre to Olan and Hanna (Heimdal) Horneland. He completed his public education at Odin School.

Fredrik started his working life at the age of 15, skidding logs with a team of horses. On December 18, 1952 he married Ingrid Pederson from La Glace and together they raised seven children. He had a variety of jobs over the years including grain buyer, partsman, farmer, and flooring contractor.

Fred showed musical talent from a young age – he could play guitar in any band and very much enjoyed singing with his barbershop quartet. He loved spending time with friends and family playing cribbage or whist. Three trips to Norway allowed him to connect with extended family in Stord, Bardo, and Numedal; he treasured the people he met and friends he made there. Everyone who knew him will remember a genuine, calm, peaceful, and charming man with a keen sense of humour.

He will be greatly missed by his children: Randy (Diane), Rick (Linda), Keith (Heather), Linda (Lyle) Robideau, Ken, Curtis (Shelly), and Alison (Lyle) Dalgleish; sister Sylvia; as well as 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He cherished them so much and they enriched his life immensely.

Fred was predeceased by his wife Ingrid (Pederson) in 2016; brother Kenneth; and sisters Alice and Lyla May.

The family is grateful for the hospital staff on Unit 23 and the staff at Mackenzie Place who provided exceptional care to Fredrik. We especially want to thank Dr. Pope for the many years he went above and beyond in caring for our Dad.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Sending our condolences to all the Horneland family. My Dad, Nelius Haugland, & Freddie were friends their whole lives, right up to playing pool again in Wildrose Manor and they got one more visit in McKenzie Place. A treasured friend!
