Obituary For Franklin Whitmore Harbour
Franklin Whitmore Harbour, affectionately known as Frank, Frankie, Daddy Frank, and Grandpa Frank, passed away at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the age of 92.
Born in Gaspé, Quebec, Frank married his beloved wife, Lou, in Galt, Ontario, on July 20, 1957. Together, they raised their family in Quebec before making the move west to Grande Prairie, Alberta, in 1977. They celebrated 69 years of marriage this past July.
Frank was a hardworking man who held a variety of jobs throughout his life, including working in a factory in Ontario, driving a truck for Eastern Bakeries for 11 years, co-owning and operating a garage and trucking business, and driving a 100-ton truck at the Gaspé Copper Mine. After moving to Grande Prairie, he worked as a wholesale partsman and earned his journeyman partsman certification. He took pride in his work and enjoyed the independence of working on the road and building lasting relationships with his customers.
Outside of work, Frank had a love for the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping, and travelling. He was a self-taught fiddle player who began practising on a wooden shingle with strings until he could afford a real fiddle. His musical talent led to invitations to play at wedding dances as well as many memorable kitchen parties that followed. Frank played the fiddle while family and friends accompanied him on guitar. Often, everyone would join in the singing and step dancing. He also loved playing guitar and singing the old country songs of Wilf Carter and Hank Snow.
Frank enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, from berry picking with his children to playing cards, capturing family memories on his movie camera, tending his rose garden, and making his much-loved apple jelly from the crabapple tree in his backyard. He had a good sense of humour and a talent for voice impressions that brought laughter to those around him. He was a devoted father who encouraged his children in their chosen paths and showed his love through thoughtful gestures and shared experiences.
Frank leaves behind his beloved wife, Lou; his five children, Deborah Muench, Randall (Donna), Lisa Mach (Dwayne), Stephan (Theresa), and Casey (Kerri); his grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Frank will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of family, music, and the outdoors, as well as the many traditions and memories he created. His fiddle may be silent, but his music, laughter, and love will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005-107 Ave). Following the service, friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon in Oliver’s Tea Room.
For those who cannot attend in person, the service will be livestreamed. The link will be available shortly before the service begins.
Memorial donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada (https://www.kidney.ca/).
His was a life well lived, and his song will continue wherever his family gathers.
While every effort is made to ensure a smooth livestream, technical or broadcast issues may occasionally occur beyond the control of Oliver’s Funeral Home.
