Obituary For Frances Leona Van Schaick

Frances Van Schaick, resident of Wembley, Alberta, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2026, in Beaverlodge, Alberta, at the age of 86 years.

Frances was born on October 10, 1939, in Grande Prairie, Alberta, and enjoyed growing up in the La Glace area. She loved to tell stories about babysitting, skating, and eating onion sandwiches.

When she was 15, her parents were chaperones at the Wapiti Dorm for all the out-of-town students, and Frances went with them. There, she met Beverley Van Schaick and would quite often tell the story of how she told her father that he was to say yes when Beverley asked him for permission to go on a date with her. They were married in 1958 and moved to the farm near Wembley shortly after, where she worked tirelessly with Bev and raised their four children. They were a big part of the community, and Frances would always feed whoever came to the door, expected or not. You didn’t leave without eating something. Her faith and family were the most important things to her.

Frances is survived by her husband of 67 years, Bev; their children, Cathy Bateman, Bonnie Colby, Allan (Maureen) Van Schaick, and Wendy (Rick) Comeau; grandchildren Jeffrey Bateman, Sarah Bateman, Amy Hughes, Mandy (Chuck) Vaughn, Jacob Colby, Jonathan (Amy) Comeau, Michael (Jess) Comeau, and Lindsey Comeau; and many great-grandchildren. Frances will be missed deeply, and the world is a little less bright without her in it. We know she is in heaven watching over her husband and family she loved.

The family would like to thank Brian and Anne Houseworth for their help with Frances and Bev. We would also like to express our gratitude to Dr. Pope, Dr. Parmar, and the nurses at the Beaverlodge Hospital for their kindness and compassion. We cannot thank you enough.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grande Prairie (10407-100 Street), preceded by a viewing at 10:00 a.m. and followed by a luncheon. After the luncheon, interment will take place at the Lake Saskatoon Cemetery in Wembley (715044 Range Road 82). All are welcome.

For those who cannot attend in person, the service will be livestreamed. The link will be available 5 minutes prior to the service.

While every effort is made to ensure a smooth livestream, technical or broadcast issues may occasionally occur beyond the control of Oliver’s Funeral Home.

I remember when we first moved to Wembley in 1973 and the Van Schaiks were our first neighbours! They opened up their home and friendship immediately to our family and I was always very grateful to them for their kindness to us all. Grew up with their children and anytime I saw them, they always were so authentic to everyone they knew and cared for! RIP Mrs Van Schaik. Your kindness is truly your gift and legacy to us all.
