Obituary For Floyd Frederick Holmes

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Floyd Frederick Holmes, resident of Grande Prairie, AB. He passed away peacefully on Monday, May 8, 2023, at Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at 94 years of age.

Floyd was born in Ethelbert, MB, on January 30, 1929. His family moved to Northern BC, in 1943 and he graduated high school in 1947 in Fort St. John, BC, finishing his high school by correspondence.

Floyd started his transport driving career at the age of 16 in Fort St. John. There he met his wife Joyce Parker in 1953, and were later married on July 26, 1954, in Whitehorse. The Yukon captured their hearts, raising four beautiful children: Connie, Gordie, Ronnie, and Barbie. Floyd spent many years driving truck along the Alaska Highway. Floyd and Joyce then moved to Kamloops, BC, in February of 1973, where he drove for Arrow Transportation until he retired in 1994. Floyd and Joyce later moved to Grande Prairie enjoying their condo living and later years at Wildrose Manor.

A career truck driver, he drove many styles of trucks and hauled a wide variety of loads in Yukon, BC, and Western Canada. Even after officially retiring he still drove truck and made rental truck deliveries until he was 87. He was very proud of his safety and accident free career.

Family meant everything to him. He enjoyed camping, billiard pool, dancing, curling, and playing cards over the years.

Floyd made many friends along his life’s journey. He always greeted you with a smile and enjoyed a good laugh. He loved telling stories and a good joke or two.

Floyd will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 67 years, Joyce; his children Connie (Chris) Donohoe, Ron (Barb) Holmes, and Barb (Dave) Dalziel; grandchildren: Julia Tetz, Sarah (Joe) Busby, Jen (Brennen) Reiswig, Kristy (Steve) Reynolds, Daniel (Nicole) Holmes, Michael (Maisha) Donohoe, Cole Holmes, and Meghan Dalziel; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as large extended family and lifelong friends.

Floyd was predeceased by his parents Charlie and Ada; his five younger sisters; as well as son Gordon.

A Service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 2:00pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Grande Spirit Foundation through https://www.grandespirit.org, or to a charity of your choice.
