Obituary For Florence Alida Logan

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Alida Logan, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Webster, AB, announces her passing on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the age of 85.

Alida was born on December 19, 1939, in Edmonton, AB, to Albert and Mabel Myers. Her father served in the Air Force. When Alida was three years old, her mother passed away, and at age seven, Alida and her brother, Wayne, were made wards of the Alberta government. They lived in several foster homes throughout their childhood years. Alida’s happiest days were spent riding horses and climbing hills on the McIntyre Ranch in Lethbridge, AB. She even sang for the future President of the USA, Dwight Eisenhower.

After leaving the ranch, she moved to Sexsmith, AB, to live with her aunty and uncle, Kay and Harry Gathercole. While living in Sexsmith, she met Merle Logan but eventually returned to Edmonton to work for the CIBC bank. Merle showed up one day at the bank and asked Alida to marry him. She agreed, and two days later, on April 9, 1959, they were married.

Merle and Alida bought land in Webster and started raising cattle. In the winters, Merle worked away in the bush, so Alida, the city girl, was left to feed cows, keep the fires going, and look after the family, all with no running water. It was very hard work, but she met every challenge head-on. This is where they raised their four children, David, Linda, Kevin and Wendy.

When Merle took a job driving a school bus and was home, Alida went to work as the desk clerk at the York Hotel and was there for many years. Often on her days off, she would bring her coworkers’ children home with her and care for them. With her family grown and gone from home, she took a position at the Grande Prairie Museum and then with the Sexsmith Historical Society. She was instrumental in restoring the blacksmith shop. Alida was also an active member of the Webster Community Church and was involved in its planning and building.

Family meant everything to Alida. When her grandchildren started arriving, she was in her glory and never refused to babysit. She loved spending time with them on the farm. They were her pride and joy.

In 2017, Alida moved to Emerald Gardens in Grande Prairie, and in November 2022, she was moved to the Grande Prairie Care Centre, where she resided until her passing.

Alida is survived by her children, David (Mary) Logan, Linda (David) Renner, Kevin (Chantelle) Logan, and Wendy Logan; grandchildren Megan (Ryan) Strach, Becky (Justin) Evarts, Heather (Trent) Hilhorst, Bradley (Avery) Renner, Caiden (Dylan) Bjornson, Maisie (Jay) Eady, Alyssa (Andrew) Nyland, and Colton Bilodeau; twelve great-grandchildren; brother Joe (Yvonne) Myers; sisters Irene (Preston) Hartwig and Marion Hoevers (Guy Huot); sister-in-law Shirley Myers; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Laurie and Ted Ostazewski; and brother-in-law Calvin McInnis.

Alida was predeceased by her spouse, Merle, in 2016; her parents, Albert and Mabel Myers; and her brother, Wayne Myers.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 11:00 am, at Webster Community Church (54077 Twp Rd 744, Webster). Following the service, interment will be held at the Webster Cemetery. Following the interment, friends are invited to join the family for lunch at the Webster Hall.

The family would like to give a sincere thank you to the staff at the Grande Prairie Care Centre in Swan Court for the care and support given to Mom in her final years. Also, to Malou, Mom’s companion for the last year: you are truly an amazing person, and we are so grateful for your dedication, love, and compassion.

Memorial donations may be made to STARS (www.stars.ca).
